Democratic Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said there has been a “real failure” when it comes to immigration, and criticized President Trump for failing to “follow through on his order.”
Jose Medina, 25, was arrested Friday after allegedly shooting and killing Sheridan Gorman early Thursday morning at a Chicago restaurant. Gorman was with a group of friends when he was killed. Medina, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was apprehended by the US Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, and released to the US under the Biden administration, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
In a new statement, Pritzker appears to point the finger at the Trump administration, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“This has been a terrible tragedy, and I know that the Gorman family has suffered a lot … There has been a real failure. That failure, of course, extends beyond the borders of Illinois. That is their national failure, the failure to have comprehensive immigration reform, the failure of the president to follow his order to follow the worst of the worst on Tuesday,” said Pritzker on Tuesday.
Pritzker made the remarks as homes in Yorktown Heights, New York, where Gorman is from, were lit up green Tuesday night in honor of the slain Loyola University Chicago student. Green is one of Yorktown’s school colors, according to CBS News.
“And in my opinion, we have a lot of work to do,” he added. “But it’s the federal government’s job to enforce immigration law, and it’s the job of local and state law enforcement to prosecute or apprehend violent criminals and prosecute them, and we should continue to do that both at the state and national level.”

Illinois is considered a sanctuary state, and local law enforcement agencies are generally prohibited from participating in immigration enforcement.
“People are running green lights just to let the Gormans know that, you know, we’re all here for them, and we’re here for Sheridan and our hearts are broken for all of them,” said New York Assemblyman Matt Slater.

Jessica Gorman, Sheridan’s mother, told the newspaper The New York Post outside his home on Tuesday, “We will get justice for Sheridan.”
“We are very focused this week especially on burying our daughter. We are very focused on the beauty of her life,” he said. “We don’t talk about this man.”

In a previous statement to Fox News Digital, the Gorman family said they were disappointed with the policies that allowed Medina to stay in the country.
“When programs fail—whether through decisions to release, lack of communication, or unwillingness to act—the consequences are not abstract. They are real. And in our case, they are permanent,” the family wrote.

An arrest report obtained by Fox News Digital shows Medina was seen on security video in the lobby of his apartment waiting for an elevator when he was unmasked after the alleged shooting. A civil engineer told police he knew the suspect “who was limping and walking very differently.”
Police said Medina was wearing a black mask and black clothing when he left the scene of the shooting, noting that he had a “distinct limp and a slow gait.” He was seen walking away from the scene of the shooting toward Pratt Boulevard at 1:12 a.m. A few minutes later, the man was seen walking north on the east side of Sheridan Street before going into the back of his apartment.

Photos of the suspect were posted on the police website, and US Customs and Border Protection identified the suspect as Medina. He was arrested at his Rogers Park apartment, according to an arrest report.
Medina told officials in 2023 that he lived in a house in Leone Beach Park in Rogers Park in 2023, which was used as a city-sponsored immigrant shelter. The city-funded shelter is slated to close in 2024, according to South Side Weekly.
