Troy’s ‘Jabe Ruth’ proves that college sports can be saved with the most patriotic home run you’ll ever see

I know we have the NBA Finals and the Stanley Cup going on right now. I get it. The Knicks are the biggest story right now, and rightfully so.

But I’m here to open everyone’s eyes to the biggest story in America that no one is talking about.

Troy Trojans, and catcher Jabe Boroff.

Drop everything you’re doing and start paying attention to what’s happening in Alabama, because the electricity is more than anything you’ll see on the field or on the ice.

IS THIS COLLEGE BASEBALL TANK SHOT THAT AWFUL?

Boroff, nicknamed “Jabe Ruth” by his teammates, has the Trojans on the brink of their first trip to Omaha. That’s right. In a country dominated by the NIL and the transfer portal, the TROY TROJANS are one win away from the College World Series.

The week that started with Nick Saban sounding the alarm about the state of college athletics ended with a team that didn’t make the NCAA tournament hosting a Super Regional for the first time, breaking attendance records, and growing up for the right reasons.

Troy beat Little Rock, 12-2, on Friday in Game 1 of the Super Regional. Boroff hit two home runs, including an eighth-inning grand slam on a patriotic bounce in left field.

And if college sports weren’t a reminder of that it should it looks like, I don’t know what it is:

Troy proves that college sports can still be saved

I’ve been hitting the table with college baseball for years now. I AM BEGGING the whole world to show respect. ESPN has a TV deal, and doesn’t show the game until May. I thought it was a wasted opportunity.

And the first 10 days of this tournament added fuel to that fire.

We had a lot of trauma, which you don’t get anymore in football or basketball. We’ve had some amazing moments, like all of Morgantown singing “Country Roads” earlier this week when the Mountaineers were eliminated from the state tournament.

Most importantly, we’ve had teams like Troy not only win meaningful games, but HOLD meaningful games. The Trojans came into the tournament, upset the Florida Gators (twice), and now have one win over Omaha.

Which brings me to Boroff, who changed the name “Jabe Ruth” a few weeks ago for an absolutely electric tournament.

The junior catcher was hitting .114 with one home run on May 9. Less than a month later, he hit .270 with 11 home runs. That’s the real number. Read it again.

He had six hits in the tournament alone, with 18 RBIs in six games. In Friday’s Super Regional opener, he hit two homers and singled in half of the team’s runs.

Do you understand how impressive that is? And, that’s why college baseball is the best. It’s everything we loved about college sports before things took off a few years ago.

We loved the tantrums and the “moments.” We liked the little-known players from the community college (Boroff spent his first two years at Enterprise State) and he just got shot. We loved the atmosphere and the feeling that this was “our school” again.

College baseball proved in the first week of the tournament that anything is possible. It’s still there. We saw you in West Virginia on Monday, and in a place called Riddle-Pace Field on Friday.

No one had heard of that place until this week. No one had heard of “Jabe Ruth” until this week. Does anyone here know if Troy had a baseball team until this week? Probably not.

We do now, and that’s why college baseball is the best.
