Kate Middleton says cancer diagnosis made her aware of drinking alcohol: reports

Kate Middleton this week admitted that she rarely drinks alcohol after being diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

“I haven’t had much alcohol since I was diagnosed,” the Princess of Wales said as she was offered a pint at the Fabal Beerhall while visiting London’s Bermondsey Beer Mile on Thursday, according to multiple UK outlets. “It’s something I have to be more careful about now.”

Princess asked owner Hannah Rhodes if the bill had non-alcoholic drinks.

“We don’t know, I’m afraid,” said Rhodes, The Independent reported. “I’d like to do that one day, but we’re going to need a little bit of expertise to do it right.”

The 44-year-old drank a drink instead, but said of Prince William, who was visiting the brewery with him, “He likes cider,” according to a Solezwe reporter.

“I’m a cider man,” William admitted, according to E News. “I love cider. I grew up on cider in the West Country.”

“Since I was diagnosed, I haven’t drunk much alcohol. It’s something I have to be very careful about now.”

Middleton revealed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer.

“In January, I had a major abdominal operation in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was cancer-free,” Middleton said in a video in March 2024 following speculation about his health. “The operation was successful. However, the tests after the operation revealed that the cancer was present. So my medical team advised me that I should undergo chemotherapy, and now I am in the first phase of that treatment.”

In January of last year, the princess announced, after completing her treatment in the fall of 2024, that her cancer is gone.

Alcohol is classified as a group 1 carcinogen, which means it raises the risk of cancer.

“You can reduce your risk of developing cancer by drinking little or no alcohol,” the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says on its website. “All alcoholic beverages, including red and white wine, beer, and liquor, increase the risk of cancer.”

The CDC says many cancers are linked to alcohol consumption, including mouth, throat, voice box, esophagus, colon and rectum, liver and breast.

“Some studies show that drinking three or more alcoholic beverages per day increases the risk of stomach and pancreatic cancer,” adds the CDC. “Drinking alcohol may increase the risk of prostate cancer. All types of alcoholic beverages increase the risk of cancer. Drinking less alcohol is better for your health than drinking more.”

The royal couple shared a video of their day at several bars on their official Instagram.
