Miguel Almiron from Paraguay becomes the first player to be sent off under FIFA’s new banning rule from the World Cup.

The World Cup has its first red card to shut up.

Ahead of the tournament, FIFA issued new rules giving officials the authority to hand players red cards if they cover their mouths while facing opponents.

However, Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron did just that against Turkey on Friday night, and deserves a red card – and potentially cost him the rest of the World Cup.

The disturbance occurred during the first half of the Group D match when Almiron and Mert Mulder exchanged words following a misbehavior near the pitch. Almiron closed his mouth as he said something to Mulder, who immediately appealed to referee Ivan Barton for a penalty.

Barton went to review the video and immediately decided that Almiron would be given a red card and sent off under the new rule set for this year’s World Cup.

“According to the law, if you close your mouth, you are sent off. It’s a red card,” said coach Gustavo Alfaro. “There’s nothing I can do about that. Unfortunately, we can’t issue a new opinion on this.”

The red card left Paraguay with only 10 players for the entire game, but they won 1-0 to top the group going to the United States.

However, Paraguay could be out of the tournament with a defeat next week against Australia, and the red card means that Almiron will be suspended from the tournament. The winner of that game will be placed second in the group and the loser will depend on the other third place finishers from other teams. Paraguay are unlikely to qualify (84% chance of progressing, per The Athletic), but they are not off the table.

It is the second time in two World Cup matches that Almiron has been sent off under the new rule established this year. He received a yellow card in the opening game against the United States after video review overturned a yellow card given to Tim Ream and gave it to Almiron instead of diving.
