Rory McIlroy gets the best of embarrassing US Open heckler with brutal comeback at Shinnecock Hills

The disgusting fan behavior we all witnessed at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills wasn’t just reserved for Wyndham Clark on Sunday. At least one fan attending the major tournament in Long Island, New York, let Rory McIlroy have it, but the six-time major champion got the last laugh.

After McIlroy hit a shot in Saturday’s third round, a fan in the first row of the gallery started yelling, “Bunker, get in the bunker!” Of course, the fan had his phone in hand to record the whole thing in the hope it would go viral.

He got the job done, but not in the style he expected.

WYNDHAM CLARK DOESN’T NEED TO BE LOVED, BUT HAS TO BE RESPECTED AFTER OUR OPENING WIN AT SHINNECOCK.

After watching his partner Maverick McNealy hit his shot on the hole, McIlroy started walking towards the fairway, but his eyes were locked on a fan. When he was about to let go of the fan with a hard stare, he hit him with his hand to show that he had a stomach.

Shouting something funny at a professional golfer standing 10 yards away from you is ridiculous behavior, but in the age of social media, it’s become the norm. It was also a big theme for this year’s US Open.

NEW YORK GOLF FANS SHOULD BE CALLED, SAM BURNS CRIES OUT WELL, WYNDHAM CLARK’S ROCK PASSES AT SHINNECOCK

The New York fans created the most hostile atmosphere in recent memory for Clark in his final round on Sunday.

From the moment he started his final round until he hit the tournament-clinching par putt on the 72nd hole as the sun set at Shinnecock, Clark was bombarded by the fans.

He screams for his ball to find a place at contact, cheers when a shot goes off the tee, and gives a little roar after each of his five balls in the final round.

It was unlike anything we’ve seen in a major tournament, especially when you consider that Clark is an American and former US Open winner, who was trying to win his country’s open.

Just as McIlroy got the last laugh, so did Clark, but it was a five-hour battle.
