The National Park Service (NPS) is investigating an incident in Yosemite National Park after receiving reports that a person was injured in what appeared to be a major fall on Saturday.
Many eyewitnesses have reported online that the fall may have been fatal.
Officials identified the victim as a 23-year-old man at Nevada Fall, a notorious and slippery area marked by a steep and powerful waterfall.
“The National Park Service is investigating an incident involving a 23-year-old man in a Nevada Fall in Yosemite National Park on June 20, 2026,” the NPS told Fox News Digital in a statement Monday.

“The park rangers received reports of someone walking in the fall, and National Park Service personnel and Yosemite Search and Rescue personnel responded.”
Search and recovery operations are underway at the base of the fall, according to officials.
The incident is still under investigation, NPS said.
The organization issued this statement after many people reported on social media that they witnessed the incident, with one Reddit user saying that they were in the area when they heard people crying.
“There were a bunch of friends who got swept up in the fall in Nevada today,” the user wrote. “The girl was saved but the other person she was traveling with went with the current and fell.”

The deceased is said to have fallen after trying to rescue a woman near the waterfall.
“Someone nearby gave the girl a branch and she was rescued, but the other one was unable to attach anything and went with the current until she fell,” said the user. “It was scary to see… I was shaking for about 1 hour… and it was painful to see a girl being saved and her friends crying all the time.”
According to witnesses, a helicopter arrived an hour after the incident and appeared to search the area, followed by rescuers who arrived with equipment.
“The helicopter came and searched for a while but we didn’t see it doing anything. Later we saw the rescuers going to Nevada Falls with equipment,” said the worker.

Nevada Fall is known for its steep, slippery and dangerous conditions, with a powerful waterfall and rapid currents accompanying a 600-foot drop.
“You just don’t realize how slippery that granite can be and how strong the current is,” wrote one Reddit user. “And there’s nothing to hold on to on the way down by the falls.”
Another person added that a fall in the area could be fatal.
“That’s not something anyone would have survived, even if they had a life jacket and helmet on at the time,” the person wrote.
“I don’t think I’ll ever hang out there again in May, June, or July. There are too many people and the water is too dangerous. As a former lifeguard, it’s very distressing to see the balls splashing through the slippery rocks and the big water flows.”
