The College Republicans of America (CRA) is facing backlash after appointing Kai Schwemmer as its new political director, with critics pointing to his past controversial statements and ties to figures associated with the “groyper” movement.
Schwemmer, who was appointed by the CRA to the leadership position earlier this month, has ties to right-wing activist Nick Fuentes and has made a number of statements that some critics have described as countercultural.
He also has a channel on Cozy.Tv, a platform founded by Fuentes and Alex Jones. Although the channel seems to be gaining followers with enthusiasm, the last video listed under the “replays” category was from June 2025.
Schwemmer appeared in a 2021 video promoting Fuentes’ “White Boy Summer” tour and was a “special guest” at Fuentes’ 2022 America First Political Action Conference, according to Jewish Insider.

In a December interview with Reawaken USA, Schwemmer said that Raytheon and Boeing executives were Jewish, including “Zionists in America” who would support US involvement and support for Israel “no matter what,” even though no top executives are Jewish.
When asked about his comments, a representative of the CRA said that “Schwemmer’s intention was not to be objectionable or unfair, but rather he encountered false information while conducting research.”

College Republicans of America was founded in 2023 amid disagreements with the leadership establishment at the College Republican National Committee. Its mission is to “assist the GOP in cultivating the next generation of Republican activists, workers and leaders.”
Several Jewish organizations, such as the ADL and StopAntisemitism, criticized Schwemmer’s nomination, citing his controversial past.
“Fuentes has a strong influence over his followers, the ‘Groyper Army,’ and often makes jokes about the Holocaust. Schwemmer has appeared at Fuentes’ conferences, broadcasts on his site and has spread conspiracy theories about ‘Zionists’ in America,” Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt wrote in X.
“At a time when we have seen the real dangers of antisemitism in higher education and know that there is a clear and growing problem on campuses, promoting people who promote this type of hateful speech undermines the credibility of the organization and the values it claims to uphold,” said StopAntisemitism founder and Executive Director Liora Rez in a statement on Fox News.
Schwemmer, who attends Brigham Young University in Utah, issued a statement on March 13 saying his past comments do not reflect his current beliefs.
“Life is a process of growth and refinement. My comments in high school and as a teenager should not be taken to accurately reflect my views or behavior now. I condemn all forms of hatred, including antisemitism, clearly,” Schwemmer wrote in X in a direct response to Greenblatt.
“I am not a racist; I am a patriotic and frankly American. Additionally, all positions I hold are personal, not CRA’s. I reject the ADL’s allegations that the College Republicans either currently or have ever hated Jews.”
Schwemmer admitted that, in the past, he spoke in “unnecessarily humiliating or humiliating ways,” adding that “since returning from my service as a missionary, I have made changes to be a better disciple of Christ. He did not elaborate in this document about what views have changed or what specific statements he was talking about.

CRA leadership did not back down in the face of mounting criticism. CRA President Martin Bertao said he would not apologize for choosing Schwemmer.
“In the last day I have thought a lot about my decision to appoint Kai as political director of CRA. And I have come to that thought. [sic] for a decision I would like to apologize for… so that NO ONE at all, CRA will ever go back to the WOKE crowd!” he wrote on March 6.
Bertao responded to Schwemmer’s statement, saying he looks forward to the new political director playing a larger role in the CRA’s efforts to help support Republicans in the midterm elections.
Schwemmer is also listed as a speaker for Turning Point USA’s Pick Up the Mic program, which was started to honor the memory of TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk.
Turning Point USA did not respond for comment.

In response to Fox News Digital’s questions about Schwemmer and the controversy surrounding his nomination, Macy Gunnell, CRA’s vice president of communications, pointed to a letter issued by CRA Chairman William Donahue saying “we’re moving forward now to not engage in any division on the Right, and instead focus all that energy on campaigning and electing Republicans.”
Schwemmer echoed these words in his statement to Fox News Digital, saying, “I, along with all college Republicans, are done feeding ourselves with the ‘eat your own’ cancel culture of division that only wants to benefit the left. We are interested in building a better future for the American people, and every minute spent focusing on mining and drama is spent having no real effect on America. The national agenda.”

Schwemmer was critical of President Donald Trump last month over his administration’s handling of the Epstein files.
“We started to distrust the government, so we voted for Trump and something new,” he told the New York Times. “Now, we’re watching him turn into what we’ve had all along. If a people-loving, right-wing president can’t be trusted, what does that leave you with?”
