Uber is expanding its Women’s Favorites feature across the United States

For most commuters, getting from point A to point B is easy. Open the app, request a ride and go. But for many women, the experience can feel different. Comfort, safety and peace of mind can all come into play when you get into a stranger’s car.

That response is what pushed Uber to introduce a feature designed specifically for women. The company calls it Women’s Favorites, and it’s now expanding across the United States.

After the first pilots and millions of trips around the world, this feature now gives female passengers the opportunity to request female drivers in many cities across the country.

The idea is simple. Give women more control over how they ride and how they earn.

How Uber’s female driver preference feature works

The new option allows female passengers to request rides with female drivers directly from the app. If the feature is available in your city, you’ll see a Female Drivers option when requesting a ride. Selecting it indicates that you prefer to be matched with a female driver if possible.

Here’s how the feature works:

  • Female passengers can request to ride with a female driver when booking a trip
  • Passengers can book a ride in advance with a female driver
  • Riders can change their preferences in their settings to increase the chances of matching with female drivers

Uber notes that likes increase the likelihood of matching. It does not confirm. Wait times can also be longer in some cases, depending on driver availability. If passengers need to be picked up quickly, they can switch back to the regular ride option.

More regulation for female Uber drivers

The review is not just about passengers. It also adds new options for women drivers to the platform. While the overall system is called Women’s Preference, drivers can enable a setting called Women Rider Preference within the Uber Driver app.

Female drivers can toggle this option to prioritize ride requests from female passengers. This allows them to choose which ride requests they want to receive. Uber says nearly one in five drivers on its platform in the United States is a woman, and the new feature is designed to give those drivers more control over how they operate.

For some drivers, that extra layer of control can make a significant difference in how comfortable they feel while operating. It also gives drivers more flexibility in how they earn through the platform.

Uber’s female driver preference for new accounts

In cities where new accounts are supported, families can use the feature. Parents and guardians can request female drivers for new passengers. The option applies to both on-demand rides and scheduled trips. For many families, this adds another layer of reassurance when little passengers need transportation.

Why Uber introduced a popular feature for female drivers

According to Uber, the idea for Women Preferences came directly from rider feedback. Women told the company they want more control over who they ride with and more flexibility when using the app.

An Uber spokesperson told CyberGuy that the feature was developed after hearing directly from female riders and drivers. “Women have asked for more choice – and we’re building it with Women Preferences,” said Brooke Anderson, Uber’s Head of Brand Communications. “This feature exists because women told us it should, and we’re proud to expand Women’s Choice across the country and bring more flexibility and control to millions more women.”

Uber first introduced a version of the Women Rider Preference feature for drivers in Saudi Arabia in 2019 after women received the legal right to drive. In the United States, pilots began in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Detroit before expanding the test to additional cities. Since then, the program has grown rapidly. More than 230 million trips worldwide have used Women’s Favorites. This feature is now expanding nationwide across the United States.

What does this mean to you?

If you use Uber regularly, the change may provide a new layer of choice. Female passengers who choose to ride with female drivers now have an easy way to request that option. It can help other passengers feel more comfortable, especially during late night trips or when traveling alone.

For female drivers, the feature gives more control over which trips they accept. That flexibility can help encourage more drivers to stay active on the platform. For families, the youth account option adds another setting that can make ride requests feel more manageable.

The feature will not replace normal ride matching. It simply adds another option that passengers and drivers can use at will.

Kurt’s priority is taking

Ride sharing has always been about convenience. Open the app, request a ride and go. But convenience and personal choice are also important. Features like these show how platforms are evolving as riders and drivers demand more control. Uber’s nationwide rollout suggests the company believes the option will continue to grow as more people learn about it. Technology often moves forward when companies listen closely to the people using their platforms every day.

Now that Uber offers a Women’s Preferences feature, would you choose to use it when booking a ride? Let us know by writing to us at Cyberguy.com.
