“I’ve been through other things off the court, so I’m going to come back and meet the family and visit and see what’s going on,” Self said. “I love what I do. I need to be able to do it when I feel good and healthy to do it well. I will go back home and everything will be discussed.”

Self missed a game in Colorado in January after taking a trip to the hospital. He also had two stents placed in his heart in 2023, and two more last year.

When asked about his health on Sunday, Self said he was not sure if he was “well”.

“But I feel – I feel as good as I’ve felt in a long time,” Self added. “I don’t make any statements. But every year, I think … if you’ve been doing it as long as I did, I’m looking at a five-year increase. Now I’m probably looking at a two-year increase, so to speak. So I’m trying to focus on this season and try to make it to the second weekend, which we failed to see. So that will lead down and I’m looking at where I’ll be back.”

The 2025-26 season ended with the St. John Dylan Darling scores the game-winner as time expires in the second round game.

“My career can’t be built on one game,” Self said when asked if it would be difficult to end his career with such a tough loss. “I said I will come back to check on my health.”

Self took the Jayhawks job before the 2003-04 season after three successful years at Illinois. He is 648-166 as a Kansas head coach. Kansas makes the NCAA tournament each season. He has only five seasons in which he has at least 10 losses.
