A Virginia Democratic Senate challenger says the party is wrong about gun rights

A political newcomer and superstar running in Virginia’s Democratic senatorial primary is causing chaos in his party after breaking with them on criminal behavior and a slew of new gun control efforts.
Mark Moran, a former contestant on the HBOMax series “FBoy Island” and former Wall Street banker, is challenging longtime Intelligence Committee member Mark R. Warner, D-Va., who he calls an “oligarch” who no longer serves his constituents.
Warner remains the richest and now fourth-richest member of parliament, with an estimated net worth of $200 million, and is running for a fourth term despite hints from Moran that he will only serve two terms.
“Since the establishment is already mad at me, here’s another truth: Virginia Democrats are completely wrong about the second amendment,” Moran said on X after angering a Virginia Senate Democrat by opposing his political ban effort.

“After dealing with the security issue, I got a gun. It made me realize how extreme our team’s situation is,” said Moran. “Dan Helmer’s (defeated) July 1st ban defines conventional firearms as ‘firearms’ so the government can seize them.”
Helmer, the Fairfax Democratic delegate, did not respond to a request for comment. He has already launched a bid to run in one of the newly drawn, allegedly gang-ridden constituencies that have yet to be approved by voters on April 21.
Moran said the Founding Fathers created the Second Amendment to protect the US from the flesh.
“[That is] whether that tyranny comes from Donald Trump or a state legislature trying to disarm you. Our right to defend ourselves will not be violated,” said Moran.
The Falls Church native’s comments angered a number of other Democrats within hours of her inauguration, including Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko — a “Ready For Hillary” activist when the former first lady was eyeing the White House in mid-2010.

“Go be a p—- at someone else’s party. We don’t do that anymore,” Parkhomenko told X in response to Moran.
Virginia Senate President L. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, who has at one point sent out heartbreaking tweets celebrating the Democrats’ turn in the governorship and pushing to expel all but one Republican congressman from Virginia, criticized Moran’s tweet on the matter, prompting his comments on gun rights.
“Anyone who opposes our efforts to rein in opposition to Donald Trump does not share our values as Democrats,” Lucas said in a statement on X. “If you want to oppose the redistricting, you’ve picked the wrong major to run. [By the way] I recommend Mark Warner.”
Moran called the artwork by fellow Democrats “very anti-democratic and a reactionary policy to Donald Trump created by DC consultants.”
He noted that Virginia voters had already approved a resolution in 2019 to remove the legislature from reducing redistricting and criticized the new maps as “slic[ing] up Arlington and take[ing] to remove the voices of everyone outside of Northern Virginia.”
“In all the local Democratic committees that I’ve been in, when this issue comes up, no one can defend it, it’s just ‘well this is what the party says is the best’ – NO. The Democratic Party is losing because of the way it responds and because it doesn’t have a big bold vision for the future,” he said.

“I can’t hold my tongue anymore except what this will do to the Dems in Virginia.”
Moran also spoke out against the expansion of data centers in Virginia, which siphons power from the grid in West Virginia and Virginia and allegedly raises costs for residential consumers.
He laid out a plan to tax data centers to create a free college fund.

While Moran found moderation on those issues, a report from the New York Post indicated his campaign platform included ending ICE and passing Medicare-for-All, which the paper said placed him to Warner’s left on those key issues.

“This year is our country’s 250th anniversary; now is the time for peaceful revolution against billionaires, tech oligarchs, data centers and all other big money interests,” he said in a statement obtained by the Post.
