Georgia Rep. Clay Fuller has vowed to increase the GOP House majority

Help is on the way for the Speaker of the House Mike Johnsonas the GOP clings to a slim majority in the House of Representatives.

Republican Rep. Clay Fuller of Georgia is expected to be sworn in by Johnson on Tuesday, one week after Fuller defeated Democrat Shawn Harris in the race. special election to fill a vacant US House seat in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, in a key battleground state in the southeast.

The seat, in northwest Georgia, was left vacant when MAGA Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene steps down in early January. Greene left Congress a year into his term, after falling out with Trump.

The special election comes as Republicans cling to a fragile four-seat majority in the House. The GOP was under the gun to ensure that the Democrats did not pull off an upset in the district that President Donald Trump carried by 37 points in his 2024 presidential victory. Fuller topped Harris with 12 points.

Referring to Fuller, Johnson said in a statement to Fox News Digital, “We look forward to welcoming him to our House Republican Conference and adding another strong member to our small but important majority.”

And the Speaker described Fuller, a former local district attorney and a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard who served in the Air Force since 2009, as “a goal-oriented leader focused on delivering results for Georgia.”

Fuller, in an interview last week with Fox News Digital minutes after winning the election, described himself as “supporting” Johnson and said his victory was “very important.”

And referring to Washington, DC, he said he was looking to “go up there immediately … to be up there and fight.”

If Fuller is sworn in, the House Republican conference will stand at 219, including Rep. Kevin Kiley of California, who became Rep. GOP contender Kevin Kiley of California.

But Democrats could increase their numbers by one to 215.

Democratic candidate Analilia Mejia was elected in Thursday’s special election in New Jersey’s left-leaning 11th district, in a race to fill the seat left vacant by then-Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s resignation late last year after winning the governor’s election.

There is another vacant seat in Congress, in California’s 1st Congressional District, following the unexpected death in early January of Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa.

The primary in the race to fill LaMalfa’s seat will be held on June 2, which is the first day in California. And a special general election will be held on August 4.

The state, in northeastern California, is solidly Republican.
