What’s better than winning hard on the diamond? Putting one on your beloved finger, if you ask Cleveland Guardians catcher Austin Hedges.

Not only did Hedges help the Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles, 8-4, on Sunday — he got engaged to his girlfriend, Lexi Dickson, at Progressive Field.

Hedges knelt on the grass, as the message was flashed on the Jumbotron at the stadium in Cleveland, while his teammates watched. Dickson smiled nervously, and finally said to Hedges, “Yes!” before hearing cheers from those watching.

Hedges told reporters that he had had his girlfriend’s ring for about two years since spring training, but didn’t have the plan until “a few weeks ago.”

“I was hoping we could win the game,” he told Cleveland.com. “I would have done it no matter what, but I wanted to win this game to make it more important.”

The message on the video board read, “Lexi, will you marry me?” causing Hedges to drop to one knee.

“It was a lot of emotions, a lot of nerves,” explained Hedges, 33. “I’m always nervous about baseball games…and I’m just trying to hang in there, knowing there were some activities after that. But it’s a special day. Special to be able to soak everything in.”

Dickson, wearing a black, custom jacket with Hedges’ number on the back and pictures of her now-fiancé, flashed her ring to Guardians players and friends and family posing for photos on the court.

It wasn’t the best of days for Hedges at the plate, going 0-for-4, though he had a perfect score. But getting to 13-10 on the season is all that matters to him at the end of the day.

As for the party, Hedges and Dickson were planning a low-key Sunday night to de-stress after an adrenaline-filled afternoon.

“Go to dinner and we’ll have fun and enjoy it,” Hedges said.

That’s probably the right move for Hedges, who has the Houston Astros coming to town to start a three-game series at Progressive Field on Monday night.

But she and Dickson get to enjoy their first night as engaged couples in the next chapter of their baseball love story.
