Carney says Canada’s US ties have become ‘weak’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney asserted that many of his nation’s “strengths” from its close relationship with the US have turned into “weaknesses” that must be addressed.

“The US has fundamentally changed its way of trading, raising its prices to levels last seen during the Great Depression. Many of our previous strengths, based on our close relationship with America, have become our weaknesses, weaknesses that we must correct,” said Carney in a video message.

“Workers in our industries that are most affected by US tariffs, in cars, in steel, in wood, are at risk. Businesses that have held back investment, are restricted by the uncertainty that hangs over us all. The US has changed. And we must respond,” said the Canadian leader.

“It’s about taking back control of our security, our borders, and our future. There are some who say there is no need for a comprehensive plan. They believe we should wait and hope that the United States will return to normal, that the good old days will return,” said Carney.

“But hope is not a plan. And longing is not a plan,” he asserted.

“We have to take care of ourselves because we can’t rely on one foreign partner. We can’t control interference from our neighbors. We can’t bet our future hoping that it will stop suddenly. But we can control what’s happening here. We can build a strong country that can’t withstand interference from abroad, that creates good jobs here at home, that is a leader in this new reliable world,” said Vasties Carney, who has a new network.

President Donald Trump has implemented an aggressive tariff policy. The Supreme Court ruled against him in February, saying that Congress — not the president — has authority over those taxes. Starting Monday, businesses are able to apply for tax refunds, as the federal government begins releasing billions of dollars in import duties.
