A member of the University of Michigan Board of Regents has been ousted after Michigan Democrats chose a candidate who shared social media praise for Hezbollah as the party’s nominee.

Amir Makled, who is a lawyer, awarded the position of Regent Jordan Acker, who is Jewish, in the nomination of the Democratic Party at the state party convention at the weekend, which sparked criticism from the former leader of the Democratic Party of the state.

More than a week before the Michigan Democratic Convention, the Detroit News reported that Makled had shared and later deleted a post on X praising Hezbollah leaders Hassan Nasrallah and Abu Ali Khalil, who were both killed in Israeli airstrikes. In both posts Makled shared, Nasrallah and Khalil were called “martyrs.”

The Democratic nominee also shared a now-deleted post from Candace Owens in which she called Israelis “demons” who “lie, steal, cheat, kill and attack.”

Brandon Dillon, former chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party, wrote an opinion piece in the Detroit News criticizing Makled’s election that was published a few days before Makled won the party’s nomination. Dillon said Makled is not a Democrat and his behavior on social media shows a “pattern of bigotry and bigotry.”

“These are not missteps or comments taken out of context,” Dillon wrote in the Detroit News. “They show a broad pattern of poor judgment that should raise serious concerns.”

In his acceptance speech for the party’s nomination, Makled acknowledged the students who participated in the anti-Israel protests that formed on the University of Michigan campus after the 7, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel.

“For these students, the students who spoke up, the students who organized, the students who refused to be told by anyone that their education is not worth fighting for, all of you remind us what a public university should be,” said Makled.

Makled, who officially represents University of Michigan students involved in anti-Israel protests, had previously called for the university’s program to divest from Israel.

Anti-Israel protests at the University of Michigan have led to reports of attacks on Jewish students. The University of Michigan is one of 60 universities notified by the Department of Education that it was being investigated for violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for failing to adequately address harassment and cultural discrimination.

In December 2024 — just months before the Department of Education shared its notice with the University of Michigan — outgoing Regent Acker’s car was vandalized. The words “Divest… Free Palestine” and an inverted triangle, a reference to Hamas, were painted in red paint on Acker’s car.

When he was attacked, Acker said it was the third time that year he had been attacked by people who were destroying Israelis.
