With his deep support, Jake Reiner painted a picture of parents whose lives and futures were “taken away” when they were killed.

Jake recalled the heartbreaking moment he heard of the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner on a happy December afternoon. 14 in the new Substack post.

“On the afternoon of December 14th, I was at Union Station at an event to celebrate the life of one of my best friends, Christian Anderson, who passed away in October. That’s when I got a call from my sister Romy telling me that our father had passed away. Minutes later, she called to tell me that our mother had also passed away,” Jake wrote.

“The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side was unbearable,” he added. “My world as I knew it had been destroyed. I was in shock. The thing I was focused on was that I had to get home as a child. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to understand what all this just happened.”

Los Angeles Fire Department officials responded to a Brentwood home around 3:30 p.m. on December 14, where two bodies were found, Fox News Digital previously confirmed. Officials later confirmed that the bodies were those of Rob and his wife, Michele.

“When the police arrived, they found two deceased people in the house, later identified as Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner,” said LAPD Assistant Police Chief Dominic Choi during a meeting of the LAPD Board of Police Commissioners. “Both victims were found in the master bedroom of this home.” Police then conducted a “thorough search” of the home and determined that there were no additional victims or suspects in the residence.

Rob and Michele’s son Nick quickly became a person of interest and was taken into custody on the night of Dec. 14. He was formally charged with the double murder of his parents on December 16. He was charged with two counts of first degree murder and a special case of mass murder.

In his Substack post, Jake talked about the additional trauma of his brother’s role in the murder.

“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable. Certainly, any loss of a parent is painful, but nothing compares to losing both at the same time and, moreover, having your brother in the middle of it,” he wrote. “It’s almost impossible to work with.”

“I understand that people have questions about what happened,” he added. “Some of those answers will come in time. But some parts of this are only for our families, and keeping them private is the only way to protect what little remains of what was taken from us.”

“If you’re not living through a disaster the way Romy and I are, it’s hard to wrap your head around how bad this has been,” he wrote. “Because it wasn’t your parents, it can be easy to move on or even forget for a while about what happened that day, but for us, it’s every day.”

“Every day since then has been horrible,” he added. “Every meeting we have, every person we talk to, every tear we shed, every movement we make is connected to the murder of our parents. In the midst of trying to process the worst time in your life, the world is looking for meetings, papers, decisions, and explanations; as if documents should come before mourning.”
