A man on bail in a separate criminal case opened fire at a Chicago hospital on Saturday, killing one police officer and wounding another, prosecutors said.
Alphonso Talley, 27, was charged Monday after allegedly killing 38-year-old Chicago Police Department officer John Bartholomew at Swedish Hospital on Saturday and injuring another officer.
Talley allegedly shot both officers around 11:00 a.m. at the hospital, where officials say he was arrested for armed robbery. When he was taken for a CT scan, prosecutors said he had a gun under his clothes, pulled it out and shot both officers.

Talley fled the scene and was found hiding under a nearby porch, where prosecutors say he was still wearing his hospital gown and allegedly carrying a 10mm handgun. Prosecutors said the bullet casings were identical to those found at the hospital.
He was charged with murder, attempted murder, unlawful felonious assault, armed robbery, aggravated discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm, dangerous firearm by a police officer, dangerous firearm, escape and unlawful use of a weapon.

Talley has prior gun-related convictions from 2021 and four counts of robbery from 2017, which prosecutors say qualifies him to be charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a repeat offender.
At the time Talley was accused of killing Bartholomew and shooting another police officer, he was out of prison on parole for armed robbery, according to the Chicago Tribune.

John Catanzara, president of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police, said during a press conference that the shooting should be a wake-up call for Illinois politicians.

“I’m going to ask you something. Are you going to continue to stand up and call out these judges and politicians and the SAFE-T Act and all the bad decisions that have been made in this building and in Springfield that have led to this moment? Or are you going to disappear into the sunset when the bond hearing and trial are over?
“Without pressure from the media, nothing changes. It doesn’t happen. They literally hide in the corner and continue their nonsense of trying to get criminals out of the street in any way, shape or form they can and justify bad behavior. It needs to f————- stop. It just does,” said Catanzara.
