Are we sure Mike Vrabel will survive the Russia scandal and coach the Patriots this season?

Are we sure Mike Vrabel is safe as the head coach of the New England Patriots?

After the New York Post published photos of Vrabel hugging and holding hands with reporter Dianna Russini earlier this month, the assumption was that his career was not in jeopardy. The thinking was simple. You get paid to win football games.

Conversely, the images raised questions about Russini’s ethical standards as a journalist. He resigned from The Athletic a week after they appeared.

But as the story continues to swirl, there is little certainty about Vrabel’s status.

Matt Cannata, chief executive officer of the Pro Football & Sports Network, predicted Tuesday that the scandals could lead to Vrabel’s resignation.

“As someone who is used to dealing with the public and is used to dealing with communication problems, I see this whole Russia-Vrabel issue leading to Vrabel’s resignation,” Cannata wrote in X. “It’s going to be hit after hit, and then there’s one bomb that’s going to blow everything up.”

Bomb or not, the situation is clear. Every few days, new photos of Vrabel and Russini appear, some from years ago.

It has become a distraction.

In some circles, scandal overshadowed the NFL Draft last week. Vrabel said he skipped the third day to “counsel” and support his family.

Sports Illustrated reporter Albert Breer, who is one of the most closely connected to the Patriots, said the situation is mutual.

“I can tell you the truth, he wasn’t the same two weeks ago in that building,” Breer said on Boston radio. “The concept that I’ve gotten to talk to people about is bravery and everything else, I think this has taken away part of that.”

Two Patriots players were asked about Vrabel last week. Neither Hunter Henry nor Robert Spillane offered much comment.

There are also stories about a Spotify playlist Russini sent Vrabel in 2022 to entertain him, while coaching the Tennessee Titans.

BILL BELICHICK’S FAMILY CONCERNED THAT JORDON HUDSON COULD ‘BREAK’ HIS ESTATE: REPORT

Last year, Vrabel led the Patriots to the Super Bowl in his first season. Despite a roster that lacked top talent, he established a culture of accountability and was widely regarded as a leader of men.

That image is now under pressure.

Vrabel initially dismissed suggestions that his relationship with Russini was anything but professional, calling them “laughable.” His tone has changed as more photos have surfaced, suggesting a lack of credibility in the first place.

How his players have responded this season is an open question. There are legitimate concerns about whether he can command the same respect in the locker room.

It is also good to ask how much he can focus on football. His name comes up almost every day in the news. On a personal level, he is a husband and father facing rumors of an affair with a journalist.

No one in professional sports has handled distractions better than Tom Brady. However, he showed signs of stress in his final season in the NFL during his divorce. For the first time in more than two decades, Brady couldn’t fully block out the noise.

Vrabel will face a similar challenge as OTAs, rookie minicamp and training camp approach.

At first, it was easy to argue that the Patriots were better than coach Vrabel in this argument. As distractions and headlines grow, we can no longer argue that with such certainty.

The Patriots are unlikely to fire Vrabel at this stage. However, resigning or even leaving the job now seems like a reasonable outcome.
