Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, was called out on social media after she said she was one of the 535 most powerful people in the country, referring to her role in Congress.

Crockett spoke with talk show host Sherri Shepherd, who asked Crockett about some of his most dangerous moments in Congress, noting his run-in with former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

“There’s no preparation for that. But I’m a black woman in America. So… some people are like, ‘Oh, but you’re a congressman.’ I’m a black woman first,” Crockett replied.

She went on to say, “The level of disrespect that is always brought to us as Black women, you know, to me, I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. I’m one of the 535 most powerful people in this country, and for some reason you think we’re on the same level, but you’re going to disrespect me?’ Like, it’s not going to happen.”

Crockett was called out for this claim, as others noted that the Democratic Party was not in control of Congress.

“He doesn’t believe that as a congressman in a party that doesn’t control the House he is one of the 535 most powerful people in America,” reporter James Surowiecki, a contributing writer for The Atlantic, wrote in response to Crockett.

Actor Robert Sterling said Crockett’s comment was one of the funniest he’s ever heard.

“To say that you are one of the 535 most powerful people in America because you are in Congress is one of the funniest things I have ever heard in my life,” he wrote.

In a follow-up post to X, Sterling wrote, “Unless you’re a senior member of an important committee (eg, ways and means), nobody outside of your district cares. You are, for all intents and purposes, politically expendable. You’re a frustrating asset, replaceable by your party and its patrons without anyone noticing.”

Jason Howton responded to Crockett’s video and said he’s “not ‘powerful’ at all.”

“You are a public servant. You are against the powerful. Even in the past, those who chose to work understood this well. You are a servant of your members, you do not see anything,” he continued.

Timothy P. Carney of the Washington Examiner wrote, “In some parts of our culture, there is an obsession. ‘respectfully’ and ‘powerfully.'”

“His 15 minutes ended a long time ago,” said James Carafano of The Heritage Foundation.

The Center for New Liberalism’s social media account also called out Crockett.

“State auto sales executives have more power than Congressional backbenchers,” the account wrote.
