After a two-week manhunt, authorities have arrested the mother-in-law accused of murdering a former Mexican beauty, Mexican officials announced Thursday.
Authorities say Carolina Flores Gómez, 27, who was crowned Miss Teen Universe Baja California in 2017, was shot and killed on April 15 in her home in an affluent neighborhood in Mexico City, according to local outlet El Pais.
Erika María was arrested in Venezuela after Mexican authorities obtained an arrest warrant and worked with Interpol to issue a Red Notice, allowing Venezuelan law enforcement to locate and arrest her on suspicion of murder, Mexican officials said.
“The detainee is currently in the custody of the authorities of that country, and the proper procedures are being carried out to bring him back to Mexico,” said the Office of the Attorney General of Mexico City.

Maria was identified as the prime suspect in the murder investigation, according to local reports, as video evidence later emerged on social media showing her mother-in-law at the scene of the incident.
The deceased was found with 12 gunshot wounds, including six to the head and six to the chest, inside the apartment next door to Polanco where he lived with his son, Alejandro, and the couple’s 8-month-old child, Mexican Out Record reported.
The son is also under investigation after reports revealed he allowed his mother to flee the scene before reporting the shooting the next day, leading to a possible cover-up, El Pais added.

A video recorded by a babysitter, released by Reforma, appeared to capture the moments leading up to the alleged murder, while the son was nearby looking after the child.
In the clip, the mother is seen following Flores into the room before multiple gunshots are heard, followed by screams.
In response, the son was seen entering the frame holding his child to face his mother asking what happened.

Still confused, Maria seemed to respond to her son with compassion.
“Nothing, you just pissed me off,” said my mother as she left.
“What are you doing? You are my family” “Huh!?”
Then the mother was heard to explain, “You are mine and you stole them.”

Flores’ mother, Reyna Gomez Molina, told Univision News that the son allegedly delayed reporting the incident because he was afraid the child would be placed in a foster home.
“I think that if he is arrested, the child will go to the children’s home, he made sure that he records videos so that they know how the child will support him while he is not there with all the papers. That is what he told me,” he said, adding that his request to take care of his grandson was rejected.
He also pressed the son to clarify whether he was close to the deceased all the time before reporting the incident but did not provide more details, according to the report.
