Obama says presidents should not direct AG to prosecute political enemies

The White House has called former President Barack Obama a “moronless class” suffering from a “severe and depressing case of Trump Derangement Syndrome” after Obama launched a veiled criticism of President Donald Trump that the president should not direct the attorney general to prosecute individuals.

“He is a disgrace for all the division he has planted in this country, and history will not judge him,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle said of the former president. “The only special interest guiding the Trump Administration’s decisions is the best interest of the American people. Only sadists like Stephen Colbert would waste their time discussing one of the worst presidents in history on his failed agenda.”

Obama said this during an interview with “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert, who asked what limits should be placed on presidential power. Obama’s appearance on Tuesday comes during the final weeks of the show.

“The White House should not be able to direct the Attorney General to prosecute anyone the president wants prosecuted,” said Obama. “The idea is that the chief lawyer is the people’s lawyer, not the president’s lawyer.”

“You can’t have a situation where whoever is in charge of the government starts using that to go after political enemies and reward their friends, right?” Obama continued.

Obama discussed his relationship with Attorney General Eric Holder, who served in his administration for six years. He said he consults with Holder regularly, but only on “broad policy issues.”

“That’s different than who you charge, what you charge,” Obama said.

Trump supporters on social media criticized Obama’s comments, pointing to Holder’s past comments describing their close relationship. In a radio interview with Tom Joyner in 2013, Holder described himself as Obama’s “wing man” when asked about his plans to leave the administration.

“I’m still enjoying what I’m doing, the work still needs to be done. I’m still in the Presidential Wing, so I’m here with my boy. So we’ll see,” said Holder.

When Holder was attorney general, he was held in contempt by the House for failing to release documents related to the investigation of Operation Fast and Furious, an operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that led to Mexican drug cartels obtaining illegal firearms. Holder has previously been discussed for preferring criminal prosecution, but has never been accused of bringing criminal charges against Obama.

Obama spoke like this when Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicted former FBI Director James Comey for allegedly threatening the life of the president based on an Instagram showing the formation of a seashell with the words “86-47,” a reference to Trump’s impeachment. The latest charges follow the dropping of previous charges against Comey by the Justice Department last year.

In addition to Comey, several other Trump foes have been indicted, including former national security adviser John Bolton and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The Justice Department has also opened criminal investigations into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.

Trump posted a message on Truth Social in September directed at former Attorney General Pam Bondi asking her to prosecute several of her political enemies.

“Pam: I’ve reviewed over 30 statements and posts that are, in fact, ‘the same old story as the last one, all talk, no action. Nothing done,'” wrote Trump. “What about Comey, Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff, Leticia??? They are all guilty as hell, but nothing will be done.”
