Getting to the World Cup games at MetLife Stadium by train this summer will cost less than originally planned.

After NJ Transit and the FIFA New York Host Committee initially announced $150 round-trip tickets from New York Penn Station to the New Jersey stadium, tickets will now be reduced to $105.

NJ Transit said it received financial support from “sponsors and other sources,” so the fares were able to come down, according to The Athletic.

After the introduction of the first prices, the Governor of New Jersey Mikie Sherrill and FIFA argued, the governor said that FIFA should pay for the train tickets. FIFA slammed Sherrill’s “unprecedented” plan and added that expensive train tickets would have a “chilling effect” on fans.

“Governor Sherrill was clear that FIFA should contribute to the transportation of its fans to the World Cup games. Since it has not done so, he ordered NJ Transit to seek private and tax-free dollars to significantly reduce fares,” said Sherrill’s spokesperson to The Athletic. “The Governor thanks all the companies that have stepped up to lower the cost to ticket holders. He will continue to ensure that the World Cup is an experience that benefits fans and all New Jerseyans.”

NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri defended the $150 train tickets, saying the final cost to the public transit company should not be the burden of New Jersey commuters.

“It is an exciting time for New Jersey to show the diversity of New Jersey and its economic position in the country and the world. Equally important, (Sherrill) said that the passengers of New Jersey cannot and will not support the movement of fans going to the game, because that would not be right,” said Kolluri, repeating that the tournament will cost NJ Transit $48 million.

“In order to transport 40,000 people and cover the cost of six million dollars (per game), we have to charge $150.”

The CEO said that if the standard fare of $12.90 is imposed, passengers will fund the $48 million debt by 92%.

Parking is prohibited at MetLife Stadium, and boarding will be limited, which means more NJ Transit is moving.
