NEW YORK – Protesters gathered Thursday outside the New York Times building in New York City to express outrage over an opinion piece by liberal writer Nicholas Kristof that contained allegations of serial sexual abuse by Israelis against Palestinian prisoners.

The article contained the testimony of men and women who alleged “brutal sexual abuse by Israeli prison guards, soldiers, settlers and interrogators.” The article made several claims, including that Palestinians were “dismembered or beaten in the testicles,” “some men had to have their testicles cut off by doctors,” and iron rods were used to rape men. Kristof also said that a reporter from Gaza said he was “ridden” by a dog before adding that “Some Palestinian prisoners and human rights monitors have also cited reports of police dogs being trained to rape prisoners.”

The article backfired on students and the Israeli government, which threatened to sue The Times. Some commentators have questioned the document, noting that several of the figures Kristof interviewed had ties to Hamas or anti-Israel activism.

The article quickly became a headline and the controversy spilled into the streets on Thursday as protesters demanded the withdrawal and even the firing of Kristof.

Protesters stood inside NYPD barricades holding signs that read “Shame on The New York Times for publishing deeply anti-Zionist” and “The New York Times: All blood libels are worth printing.” They sang saying that the piece should not be withdrawn. Many carried Israeli and American flags while others had a combination of the two.

The protest happened just two days after this story was published. Ramon Maislen told Fox News Digital that the idea to hold a protest outside the newspaper’s headquarters came together quickly. The arrangement came together via WhatsApp, according to Maislen.

NEW YORK TIMES DEFENDS ANTI-ISRAEL NEWSPAPER, ‘NO TRUTH’ IN RETURN CLAIMS

“The group is united and in 48 hours we will do this,” he said. “I think it’s very important because we have to get the word out that if you insult people, they end up being violent, and we’re trying to avoid that.”

Protesters were not only outraged by the content of the article, but also by its timing, saying it was intended to improve reporting on the sexual abuse suffered by the victims of October 7. One of the organizers of the protest, Jayne Zirkle, who works as the Director of Communications and Outreach at The Lawfare Project, emphasized that to Fox News Digital.

“They published an article that slanders Israel, and they did this one day before the October 7 rape report came out,” said Zirkle. “They want to remove the horrific sexual abuse that the victims of October 7 endured, and we want it to be removed. We want better journalism.”

Adam Louis-Klein, founder of the Movement Against Anti-Zionism, argued that the article painted Israelis as barbaric and endangered Jews around the world.

“It’s a racist, insulting slur. It’s meant to make all Israelis look evil and animalistic,” Louis-Klein said.

Zach Sage Fox, a pro-Israel activist who spoke at the protest, accused Kristof of relying “on Hamas sources and propaganda to the point of insanity.”

“They really have to do blood scandals from ancient times to paint a picture of the Jews,” Fox told Fox News Digital. He said that even if the piece will be withdrawn, these allegations are so widespread that it will no longer matter.

Fox also claimed that The Times ‘minimized the Holocaust when it was actively happening. In 2001, as The Times celebrated its 150th birthday, its former editor Max Frankel called the paper’s handling of the Holocaust “the worst journalistic failure of the century.”

“History repeats itself, and now, it’s sending itself,” Fox said. He added that the paper should “fire Kristof immediately” and “anyone else who was part of this approval process.”

The Times did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment, but the paper issued several statements defending the piece. Charlie Stadtlander, a spokesman for The Times, defended Kristof’s work and said it was “backed by independent studies,” and rejected the idea that the article would be retracted.

In a subsequent statement, the Times said Kristof relied on “documentary accounts” and cited “several documented analyzes of the practice of sexual violence and torture by various elements of the Israeli security forces and settlers.”

Kristof admitted in his article that “there is no evidence that Israeli leaders order rape.” He has repeatedly defended his work online, including a controversial piece about sexually harassing dogs.

Canine behaviorist Michael S. Gould told National Review that the idea of training dogs to rape prisoners is “absurd.”

“I’ve trained dogs to do a lot of things in my life. But no, that’s nonsense,” said Gould. “It makes no sense for many reasons: the sexual feelings of dogs, their anatomy, the actual concept of their body.”
