Pricey Fear of God Essentials hoodies are becoming a must-have status symbol for teens and teens, leaving some parents reeling from the cost of keeping up with the trend.
“It felt a little expensive, at the time, for 11- and 12-year-olds,” Kinna Thomas, a mother of two, told Business Insider in an article published Saturday about the clothing line Godliness Matters.
A clothing line, ranging in price from about $33 for four t-shirts hoodies for other kids from about $130 to $200, was created by Jerry Lorenzo and introduced at the beginning in 2011, with the Essentials line launched in 2018.

In the interview published on luxury fashion site Ssense, Lorenzo said the brand is not overtly Christian, but part of who it is.
“If someone asks me how Christianity fits into it, it just fits because it is part of who I am,” said Lorenzo. “But this is not a Christian clothing brand. It’s not, ‘Hey, this is about Jesus!’ Although since my brand has grown beyond my expectations, naturally I only want to give credit to him for my success, if you want to call it that. Success for me is the fact that I can come to the meeting with you in my gym clothes. That’s success! That I don’t get up and put on a tie.”
Thomas said it was 2022 when his boys asked for Fear of God Essentials items for Christmas, “I was like, ‘Wow, what are we doing,'” Thomas said.
Business Insider reported that Thomas bought the clothes for his two boys, 15-year-old Timmy and 16-year-old Julian, and that they are a staple for his kids.

“I think people like it because it looks clean without doing too much,” Julian said of the Essentials hoodies, adding that they are “very popular” at his school.
“I also like that Essentials doesn’t try too hard,” added Timmy. “It’s easy, comfortable, and still looks good, which is probably why so many young people wear it all the time.”
According to Business Insider, parents also like this product because it helps their children express themselves in positive ways.
“My children have a private education in a Christian school, and they are allowed to wear Fear of God Essentials,” Thomas said. “They are not allowed to wear other types.”

Another mother, Amy Nachon, said she is not too worried about the cost of the clothes because they are of high quality and she can find something behind them.
“If my son knows what he wants to wear and has an idea of his style and appearance, I will support him in that,” said Nachon. “Seventh grade is hard enough.”
