Comedian Patton Oswalt criticized “Real Time” host Bill Maher this week over what he described as Maher’s attempts to “put down” President Donald Trump, saying the comedian was wrong to believe he could get the same thing as Trump without ending up as a victim.
“The reason Trump turned on Bill Maher is because Bill tried, I’m sure with good intentions, to put him down and you can’t do that to him,” Oswalt told SiriusXM host Dean Obeidallah, comparing Maher’s approach to popular anti-Trump hosts like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.
“Colbert and Kimmel … Trump hates them, but he hates them because they don’t like him. He wants them to like him, and then the minute they like him, he disrespects them because, deep down, he hates himself,” he continued.
“You have to stick to your guns and just go, ‘Yeah, this guy sucks.’ In time, it will pay off, and anyone who does business with Trump, you can imagine that basic greed would make you want to oppose him, because anyone who does business with him, is destroyed! “

Oswalt’s comments appeared to refer to an incident in February in which Trump criticized Maher on Truth Social after the HBO host continued his anti-Trump rhetoric after a dinner between the two at the White House last year.
Trump was direct with Maher about comments that mocked him for suggesting that China would end all hockey in Canada as the two countries deepen their economic ties.

He began by calling his dinner with Maher “trash [of] time” then accused Maher of being nervous at their first meeting before criticizing his schedule and ratings.
“He was very angry with me because I didn’t get his joke about how China is going to make Canada quit hockey,” Maher replied at the time.

“You know, I think we’ll have to work on that one for a while.”
Maher defended himself against some of Trump’s criticisms,
“[Trump] he got off on me and said dinner was a waste of time. Well, I didn’t think so,” he said.

“And I’m a jerk, and I’m low-level, simple, and all this s—. Because I never stopped criticizing him. I never said I would.”
Fox News Digital reached out to representatives for Maher’s “Real Time” show for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
