Former Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, is poised to receive a bid to return to Congress after winning a heated Democratic primary on Tuesday.

Allred defeated Rep. Julie Johnson, D-Texas, in a runoff election for a House position that was recently released on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

The winner will likely win the November general election in the blue state. Republicans remade the Dallas-based seat to make it more Democratic last year when they passed a new congressional map designed to help the GOP flip as many as five seats.

The primary race turned ugly as both candidates battled to keep their political careers alive in one of the few Texas House seats where Democrats still hold a chance.

REORDER HELPS REPUBLICANS, DEMOCRATS FLIP HOUSE SEATS

Democratic Texas Rep. Marc Veasey, who holds the district, chose not to seek re-election, prompting Johnson to join the race after Republicans kicked him out of his district.

Johnson, a new lawmaker, replaced Allred in Congress after he left the seat to file a failed bid to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in 2024.

Allred has decided to challenge Johnson for an open House seat in late 2025 after suspending his 2026 Senate campaign when he failed to win a majority.

The former NFL quarterback later endorsed Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, in the final months of the Senate primary race after accusing Rep. James Talarico, who is against Crockett, for making racist remarks about him that he allegedly made during a secret phone call with a party activist.

Talarico, a Democratic Senate nominee, strongly denied calling Allred a “moderate black man” and said his cryptic remarks referred to the former congressman’s campaign style.

Crockett endorsed Allred in April and appeared on the campaign trail with her. Meanwhile, Talarico publicly supported Johnson’s campaign.

Johnson also has the support of the House Democratic leadership, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the pro-abortion Emily’s Group and the US Chamber of Commerce, among other groups.

Allred may have benefited from high-profile name recognition due to past national programs and significant fundraising gains.

He emerged as the top vote-getter in the March 3 primary, leading Johnson by 11 points. However, the former congressman failed to get more than 50% of the votes, leading to a runoff election.
