Fort Worth principal to be investigated for Sharia law positions

The newly appointed principal of a Texas high school is facing controversy and a district investigation after allegations that his social media posts defending Sharia law and supporting progressive causes resurfaced online.

Shayma Alzubi, currently identified as the ninth grade assistant principal at Southwest High School in Fort Worth, has been selected by Fort Worth ISD as the next principal of Western Hills High School and announced the news in a recent Facebook post that appears to have been deleted.

Alzubi’s appointment faced criticism online after screenshots of his past social media posts it appeared.

Posted on Jan. 23 shared by Alzubi appears to defend Sharia law by comparing it to other religious principles and principles such as “biblical principles.”

An August 2021 repost from FWISD 4 ALL wanted people to vote on a mascot mandate at the 2021 Fort Worth ISD school board meeting, along with a photo of Alzubi and another person holding a “BLACK LIVES MATTER” banner.

Another photo had a banner reading, “I am #WithDreamer I SUPPORT DACA,” which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and a photo of Alzubi alongside the text, “Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine.”

In a post Tuesday on X, County Board of Education member Julie Pickren called for an investigation into Alzubi, writing, “I am asking @teainfo to conduct an investigation into Shayma Alzubi for violating the Texas Code of Ethics for Administrators. Additionally, I am requesting an investigation into Dept. Commissioner of School Governance Steve Lechelop who oversees Fort Worth ISD Board Manager.”

In Tuesday’s update to X in response to his first post, Pickren shared a statement he said from Fort Worth ISD suggesting Alzubi may be reassigned pending an investigation.

Brandon Hall, a member of the State Board of Education, told the Dallas Express, “I am very concerned to see the extreme content that Shayma Alzubi posted on social media,” and at the meeting. Post on Tuesday to X he wrote, “As a member of the State Board of Education representing FWISD, you better believe I’m on top of this situation. Stay informed.”

In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, Fort Worth ISD said, “Yesterday, May 26th, Fort Worth ISD was made aware of several social media posts from the past by a candidate for the district’s principal position. After review, it was determined that the posts may not be consistent with the district’s social media policy and employee expectations. Therefore, the candidate will not comment further on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The investigation is open.”

“Fort Worth ISD is in full compliance with state law and TEC 28.0022, FWISD administrators ensure that all matters of public policy or public affairs are addressed in a fair and impartial manner,” the statement continued. “Our district leaders, teachers and staff will not bring personal political views into the classroom. Fort Worth ISD serves many families and students who are engaged in the community and hold diverse views. As a taxpayer-funded organization, we will remain focused on our mission to provide a quality education for all students.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Alzubi and Pickren for comment but did not immediately receive responses.
