Bryson DeChambeau admits to turning to AI to help improve his swing after struggling at LIV Golf Korea

Bryson DeChambeau may have finished third at the recent LIV Golf event in South Korea, but that doesn’t mean he’s happy with his game.

DeChambeau, who won back-to-back LIV events in March, found himself in the lead after the opening two rounds in South Korea, but put together a disappointing third round at 1-over par. As is often the case with DeChambeau after what he saw as a poor performance, it turned into a long night on the driving range looking for something.

The two-time US Open champion has made it a habit to spend very long hours in the gym surrounded by a handful of members of his support staff, which apparently has a new member these days, but which isn’t technically true.

Speaking to reporters after his final round of 65 on Sunday, DeChambeau said he spent a lot of time the night before talking about artificial intelligence, trying to improve his swing.

“I’ve spent long hours on the range trying to figure things out and I was talking to the AI last night trying to go through the different physics rules that make the club spin, put alpha torque and gamma torque in there,” DeChambeau said. “I was like, what made that happen, and I was just talking about the pressure of the grip and the tension.”

DeChambeau went into more detail about his conversation with the AI, explaining that, since he didn’t know what to do with his own skating, the AI was actually acting as a skating coach.

“I was hitting the club on the ground trying to figure out what to do. I was frustrated. I was trying everything in my body. I actually couldn’t find it in the lineup,” DeChambeau continued. “I went back and started talking to Gemini trying to figure out what it would be like to just swing the club. The hands just felt like they were going forward like this and I couldn’t get the club to turn. Even if I tried to stop it here, it wouldn’t turn.”

It’s hard to say whether DeChambeau’s conversation with the AI had an impact on his final round, but it’s equally hard to say it did any damage, as his final round of 65 tied for the lowest score of the day.

DeChambeau had a strong year on the LIV circuit with two wins and a solo third-place finish, but missed the cut at both the Masters and the PGA Championship.
