The New York Yankees bats came alive in a historic inning against the Athletics on Sunday.

The Yankees piled on 13 runs in the third, following Aaron Judge’s rousing speech. The three-time American League MVP told his teammates they needed to wake up after Athletics starter Jacob Lopez retired the first six batters he faced.

“I felt like we were a little behind in the first two innings. I expect more from the boys and I know they expect a lot from them. A few special words are there to keep it going. The boys responded,” said Judge in what could be the understatement of the year.

It started with a disaster of A’s mistakes.

Lopez struck out two batters after Anthony Volpe reached on a hit. He failed to cover first base when Paul Goldschmidt hit a grounder to right field. Ben Rice then followed with a two-run double, followed by a Judge blooper and a Cody Bellinger RBI single.

Lopez was ejected from the game after being hit by Bellinger. Reliever Michael Kelly allowed five batters to reach safely after that.

The Yankees scored 10 runs before the first out of the inning. Goldschmidt came back and struck. Rice followed in three times.

“Batting without going out, it’s amazing,” said Jaji. “That’s what this team can do. Face the wall, find a way to get out of it and continue to put pressure on it. We needed all those 13 runs.”

New York had 11 hits, four walks and four stolen bases in the inning. The Yankees’ 13 runs scored were the most since they scored against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 21, 2005. It was one behind the inning record, which was set on July 6, 1920, against the Washington Senators.

It was the first time 12 consecutive hitters had reached an inning safely since they did it against the Senators on September 11, 1949, in the first game of a doubleheader. He was just two batters short of the MLB record, set by the Detroit Tigers with 14 in the sixth inning on June 17, 1925.

It’s amazing,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “It’s great that we were able to get up. Obviously, there are many very good things that are annoying. …I don’t think it’s a very good game for either side. But we were able to put on an outstanding innings.”

While a blessing for the Yankees, it was a nightmare for A’s manager Mark Kotsay.

“I don’t really know how to describe that inning,” Kotsay said. “Obviously, the two walks were a problem right away. Hit after hit, really. Sometimes you think the ball is going to fall to somebody, and it doesn’t.”
