FIFA has hit back at New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherill after he posted a critical video saying FIFA should pay NJ Transit fans tickets for World Cup games at MetLife Stadium this summer.

In his video, a response to the “headlines” about reports of $100 train tickets, Sherrill said that FIFA “must pay for the ride” since NJ Transit is charged $48 million, while FIFA will make $11 billion.

FIFA said it was “very surprised” by Sherrill’s “fan transport” before explaining the “Host City Agreements.”

“The original FIFA World Cup 2026 Host City Agreement signed in 2018 required free transportation for fans to all matches. Realizing the financial difficulties placed on the participating cities, in 2023 FIFA modified the requirements of the Host City Agreement for all host cities as follows: All match ticket holders and persons authorized to access public transport travel at additional cost to public transport or the stadium on match days,” we started the statement.

“FIFA has worked for years with cities that participate in transportation and transit programs, including facilitating millions of dollars in federal funding to support cities that host transit.

“The FIFA World Cup will bring millions of fans to North America and the associated economic impact. Many fans will travel to NYNJ to enjoy the eight scheduled matches. FIFA is not aware of any other major event held at NYNJ Stadium before, including other major matches, international concert tours, etc., where the organizers had to pay to transport fans.”

Current fares from East Rutherford to Penn Station are under $13.
