Four patriotic movies set the mood for flag day and celebrate the American spirit

Sunday is going to be one hell of a day in America, that’s for sure.

The country is in the midst of hosting a spectacular World Cup — which has captured the hearts of foreign visitors from all over the world — and is still reeling from Friday’s victory over their giants, Paraguay.

To add to the excitement, the White House is celebrating America’s 250th birthday in style with the UFC event of the year right on the lawn.

And, on top of that, not only is it President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, it’s also Flag Day.

Can it get more patriotic than that?

To celebrate such an important day of pride in your country, I have selected four movies that you MUST put on to celebrate your Flag Day in style.

This freedom play will get the Red, White and Blue blood in your veins and make you proud to be an American.

“The Patriot” (2000)

Let’s start with a very patriotic film, it literally lives up to its name.

Mel Gibson’s turn as Benjamin Martin during the Revolutionary War will hold attention throughout the film’s run.

It’s a fictional narrative and a little pulpy, but “The Patriot” delivers everything a red-blooded American wants in a war movie about the birth of his nation.

IN 2026, YOU MUST MAKE A DECISION TO KNOW THE REVOLUTION

Gibson’s acting is good, but special mention must go to Heath Ledger as Martin’s son Gabriel, and Jason Isaacs as the villainous Colonel William Tavington, a delightfully hateful Redcoat.

I can’t think of a better way to kick off your Flag Day celebrations than with this trip to Colonial America.

Well done, Roland Emmerich.

“Apollo 13” (1995)

From the Revolution to the Space Race, this ’90s classic celebrates American individuality and determination in a stunning two hours and twenty minutes.

Tom Hanks is especially good, as always, and his role as Captain Jim Lovell in the cursed spaceship won him and the film several awards.

“Apollo 13” is a good reminder that if America wants to achieve something, nothing can stand in its way.

It is more historically accurate than “Patriot” without sacrificing any of the parts of the story that make our country look amazing.

This was during a time before Hollywood victimized American men and denigrated their accomplishments, so it’s always a fun film to revisit from a simpler era.

Take that, commies!

“Top Gun: Maverick” (2022)

The original “Top Gun” is one of my favorite movies of all time, but its sequel from nearly four decades later could be patriotic, and I never thought that was possible.

Pro-America iconography and themes are thick and plentiful in “Maverick,” with bad guys and conflict updated for a modern audience.

Maybe it’s because the movie came out at a time when it was “favorite” to hate America, but “Top Gun: Maverick” stands out in a sea of woke schlock from the early 2020s.

“Top Gun” was a patriotic film in its own right, but dozens of other blockbusters from the Reagan Era were equally pro-America.

This bad boy stands alone in that regard among its contemporaries, so throw it on and show it some love this patriotic holiday.

“The Miracle” (2004)

What shows more patriotism than a bunch of lowly Americans taking down the evil Russian empire with their game on US soil?

Nothing, which is why “The Miracle” might be the perfect movie to get your Flag Day juices flowing.

Very few scenes will top Coach Herb Brooks’ locker room speech, where he declares his American boys “the greatest hockey team in the world.”

Kurt Russell does an amazing job channeling Brooks, and the supporting cast is aces as well.

Put on “Miracle” and annoy all your friends and family by asking them “who are you playing for.” That’s what coach Brooks would want.

Happy Flag Day, folks!
