A new documentary called “Hollywood Does Abortion” claims that abortion has been “highly stigmatized” by the entertainment industry until recently.
The film, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, is described as focusing on how “from the 1970s to the present, film and television have often relied on dangerous misrepresentations about abortion and the people who seek it.”
“In shows like ‘Roseanne’ and ‘Party of Five’ or movies like ‘Juno,’ actors often feel bad about having a baby and maybe have a false positive or miscarriage that prevents them from choosing or choosing to give birth,” Variety reported on the film.

The article continued, “Some films and series such as ‘Dirty Dancing’ or ‘The Sopranos’ have shown women who nearly die from abortions or have long-term medical consequences that leave them unable to have children. The negative portrayal of abortion in these films and series is inconsistent because Hollywood is often seen as a hotbed of liberal politics.”
Directors Barbara Attie, Janet Goldwater and Mike Attie argued that while there has been more media coverage of abortion in recent years, much of it is still being portrayed in a negative light.

“We think Hollywood is very progressive, yet we went through a great period when abortion was very stigmatized,” said Barbara Attie, according to Variety. “Shame was made. There would be a conspiracy when someone thought of having an abortion. They would ask their friends what they should do, then they would feel pain because of it, and then they would miscarry. The kind of messages that were given to us by television and movies were eye-opening.”

Even in movies or television shows that show women having abortions, the film says Hollywood movies and TV have exaggerated the medical issues or misrepresented post-abortion regret.

“He’s promoting this idea that there will be regret for a long time,” said Goldwater. “There’s research that shows that people who are turned away and don’t have abortions actually have the most regret and long-term financial and emotional consequences. And it turns out that people who have abortions don’t regret it much. They get a lot of relief.”
Commenting on Fox News Digital, the pro-life organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America called the film’s proposal “a difficult situation to argue.”

“From Jean Harlow to Judy Garland, Hollywood has relied on abortion and coercion to control theatergoers, compounding torture and maintaining glamorous ideals,” said communications director Kelsey Pritchard. “Many are deeply traumatized by it; women who have abortions are at high risk of negative mental health outcomes, especially the many who face stress and endure unwanted abortions.”

He added, “At the moment, Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion business, and other pro-abortion groups are making a huge effort to normalize abortion on our screens. Where there is an exception, they often meet real popular success even in the face of scrutiny, while efforts to facilitate the killing of unborn children are box office.”
