The Secretary of the Department of Education, Linda McMahon, said on Monday that the federal tax credit scholarship will help parents flee failing schools.

“This is money from the private sector that has been put into the education pot,” McMahon told The Faulkner Focus.

“Those agencies that provide tuition money that is approved by the governor in the state can give scholarships to parents who want to take their child out of a failing school or have private tutors or if they have children with special needs, they can add that at no cost to the taxpayers.”

McMahon believes Democrats are rejecting the tax credit scholarship program simply because it’s “a Trump measure.”

“I believe that is the only reason,” he added. “Why any governor does not want to enter into this is disgraceful to me,” he said.

As of today, more than 20 states have opted in to the Education Freedom Tax Credit program.

McMahon’s comments come after he asked Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to appoint the state in the system.

“The Education Freedom Tax Credit is not a far-fetched idea, it’s a local solution that puts Michigan families in control,” McMahon said at Hamtramck Academy during a visit to the Great Lake State to promote the program.

A federal tax-credit scholarship program, also called the Education Freedom Tax Credit, it allows taxpayers to reduce their taxes, but, the governors have to buy into the system. The policy allows taxpayers to receive up to $1,700 in tax credits dollar for dollar for donations to organizations that provide scholarships.
