Congressional Democrats are calling for President Donald Trump to be impeached through extraordinary measures, although they have previously dismissed similar calls against former President Joe Biden.

More than 50 Democratic lawmakers have called on the Trump administration to effectively impeach him using the 25th Amendment, saying the president is unfit to serve for his views and actions on Iran. Their demands were prompted by his announcement on social media that “the whole civilization will die” unless the Iranian government agrees to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

“Of course I think the president should be removed,” said Sen. Andy Kim, DN.J.. “I mean, he’s unfit for office. I think it’s the 25th Amendment, and if not, he’s going to be impeached.”

But less than two years ago, Republicans made a similar argument against Biden that Democrats ignored.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., then wrote a letter to then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken asking him, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, to invoke the 25th amendment.

“If President Biden is unwilling to resign, for the sake of our great nation, you must do your part to relieve him of his constitutional powers and duties,” Schmitt wrote.

Now, only a small group of Senate Democrats have filed a lawsuit against Trump, and most of the excitement is coming from the House.

Democrats’ calls to impeach Trump or the 25th Amendment will not happen without widespread GOP support. House Democratic leadership, however, continues to provide the platform for those discussions.

House Judiciary Committee member Jamie Raskin, D-Md., will hold a caucus-wide briefing on the effectiveness of the 25th amendment on Friday afternoon.

In the summer of 2024, Republicans want Biden removed from office after a bad debate against Trump and following a report from Special Counsel Robert Hur that questioned his ability to understand and handle classified documents.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said at the time, “There are a lot of people asking about the 25th amendment, asking for the 25th amendment right now, because this is an alarming situation.”

“Our enemies see the weakness in this White House, as we all do,” Johnson added. “I’m not happy to say that. I think this is a very dangerous situation.”

Democrats quickly closed positions and disputed allegations that Biden’s mental acuity was rapidly declining. Others, however, have called for Biden to drop out of the race against Trump out of fear that he won’t be able to beat his political rival in the race after he stumbled during their only debate.

The top Democrat in Congress, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., reportedly privately urged Biden to step aside, while dozens of Democrats publicly asked him to drop out of the race while there is still time to find a successor.

However, no one called for the 25th amendment to be used against Biden. Pelosi, however, has renewed her call to see Trump impeached through the process in recent days.

“Donald Trump’s instability is more clear and dangerous than ever,” Pelosi told X. “If the Cabinet is not willing to invoke the 25th amendment and restore sanity, Republicans must reconvene Congress to end this war.”

Schumer has so far stopped short of calling for Trump to be impeached.

Trump, when pressed for action on Iran, joked in April at a Cabinet meeting that if he revealed what would happen next, his Cabinet would remove him from office.

“I can’t say what we’re going to do because if I did, I wouldn’t be here for long. They might – what? The 25th Amendment – They’re going to establish the 25th Amendment,” Trump said. “They didn’t do it with Biden, which is shocking.”
