CBS anchor Margaret Brennan struggles with Hegseth’s prayer post

NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

CBS News’ “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan raised eyebrows Thursday with an unusual social media post that many believe was critical of people of faith.

The story started when Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth spoke about Operation Epic Fury in a sad press conference this morning and when he vowed to “honor” the sacrifice of six US service members who died in a plane crash last week.

“May the Almighty God continue to bless our soldiers in this war. And, to the American people, please pray for you, every day, kneel down, with your family, in your schools, in your churches, in the name of Jesus Christ. To the soldiers, keep moving and Godspeed,” said Hegseth to close his words.

Brennan responded with X, “The Secretary of Defense is telling the American public to pray for our soldiers who are on their knees and call on the name of Jesus….”

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded, “Only in DC is something like this considered remotely offensive.”

Attorney Brandon Gill added, “Democrats just get upset when they hear someone use the name of Christ. What does that tell you?”

The official White House account of the immediate response also blasted Brennan.

“Only a leftist ‘journalist’ would be offended by praying for our soldiers,” wrote Rapid Response 47.

Hegseth’s press secretary, Kingsley Wilson, noted that it was the same request “Americans have been making since George Washington prayed for our soldiers at Valley Forge.”

“Every now and then, they come out and tell you what they think about you and your beliefs. Think what they say in private,” responded Conservative commentator Jesse Kelly.

Federalist founder Sean Davis responded, “Go cry about it. We’d be in a much better place as a country if all our leaders did this.”

Conservative radio host Erick Erickson suggested the CBS anchor “thinks this is controversial,” while GOP strategist Steve Guest said he’s “attacking people of faith.”

“If this seems like a small controversy, it can be rightly affecting to read what the men who founded our nation did, said, and prayed in the name of Jesus Christ when they ruled,” wrote pastor Josh Howerton.

Many others went to X with Brennan’s answer:

CBS News did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Brennan, who has famously broken with members of the Trump administration in the past, was voted by listeners of the “Ruthless” podcast to be the biggest “hacker” in the media industry last year.
