OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spoke candidly in a new interview about his concerns about AI with podcast host Laurie Segall, saying he hopes he hasn’t let his son use such technology.

Altman appeared on Thursday’s episode of “Mostly Human,” where Segall asked her about her concerns about parenting amid rapidly advancing technology, saying it was “probably the most important thing” she could think about.

We’re both raising little boys,” she said. “And I think I’ve said this to you before, like we’re both raising little boys, but in a sense you’re raising my son, too. As constructive technology it will be integrated into all aspects of my son Charlie’s life.”

“I hope you haven’t let him use it yet,” said Altman, who has a young son who was born last year.

“I never let him use it,” she said. “When do you let your son use it?”

Not for a while,” Altman said, explaining that people often ask him, now a father who plans to have more children in his family, “‘Do you feel responsible about how you don’t destroy the world with AI?’

He went on to say, “My highest order is not to destroy the world with AI, like it doesn’t matter how good everything else is if we do that.”

OpenAI launched the productive AI chatbot ChatGPT, which has had a significant impact on AI development marked this decade. Its popularity, ubiquity, and questions about its reliability have led to debates about the ethics and potential pitfalls of its use.

Altman added that he always thought about the future world his children would grow up in, to the extent that he used to write every night so that his youngest children could read what he thought about when they were older and could appreciate his thoughts. He was finally told by his lawyers to stop this practice, he added.

Altman noted that it was actually another aspect of technology that gave him pause as a parent.

“The thing that’s changed a lot is how I feel about algorithmic feeds and iPads in the hands of little kids and things like that, and when I look at kids just older than mine you can’t take an iPad away from them,” he said, noting that concern he feels “very strongly.”

Although she says she likes the fact that her son will “grow up in a world where computers are smarter than him and do whatever he wants,” however, “I want him to like playing on the wall right now.”
