The Cleveland Clinic has agreed to pay $2 million in transitional care as part of a settlement with the Justice Department that resolves allegations that the hospital system submitted improper insurance claims related to sex-related medical procedures for children.
The settlement, announced June 5, requires the Cleveland Clinic to pay $308,000 to settle the billing allegations and contribute $2 million to what the DOJ described as “restorative care” for the transplants.
“We are pleased to have worked together to reach a resolution related to an unintentional coding problem involving a small number of patients,” Cleveland Clinic told Fox News Digital in a statement Thursday. “We remain focused on providing exceptional care to our patients and communities. We have complied and will continue to comply with all federal and state laws.”
The clinic added that it already offers transitional care to patients who have requested it.

A press release from the Department of Justice emphasized that the Cleveland Clinic settlement came less than a month after Texas Children’s Hospital agreed to pay a $10,000,000 fine for similar violations, including charging Texas Medicaid for “unlawful and illegal ‘transgender reassignment’ interventions,” according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and treatment providers.
“These historic commitments go hand in hand with the elimination of these dangerous medical practices with huge investments in repairing the damage they cause and restoring the lives of victims,” reads the press release.
“In dealing with this settlement, the United States has agreed that the Cleveland Clinic has taken reasonable steps to authorize it to cooperate with the Department in its investigation,” it added. “At all times during the investigation, the Cleveland Clinic remained cooperative, proactive, and solution-driven, as highlighted by its multibillion-dollar commitment to providing care to victims who need it most.”

Brett Shumate, assistant attorney general for the Civil Division, said in a statement that he is “grateful that institutions like the Cleveland Clinic and Texas Children’s have decided to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.”
He added, “Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to providing millions of dollars in care for transgender people is a sign of that. I am very grateful for this decision by Cleveland Clinic, but our work is far from over, and our department will continue to work tirelessly to protect America’s children and hold those who have taken children at risk, whether they are medical companies or pharmaceutical companies.”
