Former Vice President Kamala Harris gave podcast host Don Lemon her definition of the word “hope” on Friday, leading to a clip that went viral on social media as a “word salad” answer.

“I really believe this,” Harris said. “We all have a light within us. And we need to know that that is what inspires our hope as much as anything outside of us.”

The former vice president and 2026 presidential candidate continued his long-winded response as he urged Americans not to lose sight of their vision for the future in the face of political or personal loss.

“And when we hear that again and we don’t allow an election or a person to dim that light, and instead shine it, let this kind of light carry us especially in times of darkness, that we not only take that hope, but we encourage that hope in each other,” said Harris.

“And especially, right now, it is very important that we not only have hope, but also understand that that should be action,” he concluded.

Harris’ seemingly silly response quickly went viral on social media, with critics slamming the former vice president.

Lemon went on to ask Harris if he plans to run for the state’s highest office again in 2028.

“I haven’t made up my mind, to be honest with you,” Harris replied, unfazed by the possibility of a run.

“I have spent a lot of time traveling the country [and] listening to the people,” he continued. “I think people want a leader who is willing to take risks, instead of doing what the people like. I think people want to know that they are seen and heard, and that their leaders – whether they are at the local, state, federal or White House level – put people first. You know, they look at themselves in the mirror.”
