Charlize Theron remembers her mother shooting her father in self-defense

Charlize Theron recounts the shocking details of the day her mother killed her father.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, the 50-year-old actor recalled the night his mother shot his father when he was 15 years old, saying he’s talking about it to help “other people not feel alone.”
“I’ve never heard of a story like that,” he said. “When this happened to us, I thought we were the only people. I’m not bothered by this anymore.”
The actor went on to explain the events that led to his father’s death, he said it all started when he did not greet him when he arrived at his uncle’s house after spending the night watching movies, he said: “I even peed badly.

He noted that respect for elders is a big thing in South Africa, and since his father was drunk, “he just mumbled. Like: ‘Why didn’t you stop? Who do you think you are?’
The actor of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” recalled that his father was angry with him, and when they got home, he asked his mother to say that he was sleeping, to avoid a conflict with him.
“I went into my room and turned off the lights and panicked,” she said. “My window was facing the driveway, and I could see the level of anger, frustration, or displeasure in the way he was driving. The way he got into that place that night, I can’t explain it. I just knew something bad was going to happen.”
Theron’s gut feeling turned out to be true, as she said her father then “broke into the house” by saying “shoot.”[ing] through the iron doors to enter with his brother.”

Both Theron and her mother “knew it was serious” and got to work.
“When he broke through the first gate, my mother ran to the safe to get her gun. She entered my bedroom. We were both holding the door with our bodies because there was no key,” he explained. “And he just backed up and started shooting at the door. And this is crazy: Not a single bullet hit us. It’s crazy to think like that.”
“But the message was very clear. I’m going to kill you tonight. Do you think I won’t be able to enter this door? Look at me,” he continued. “He went to the safe, my mother opened the door while my brother was standing. My brother ran down the hallway, shot one bullet in the hallway that rang out seven times and shot him in the hand. It’s something you can’t explain. He then followed my father, who was opening the safe to take out other weapons, and then shot him.”

A year later, Theron left South Africa to pursue a modeling career in Italy, and later found her way to Hollywood.

He began his career in Hollywood in 1996, and quickly made a name for himself in films like “The Devil’s Advocate” and “The Italian Job,” later winning an Academy Award for his role in the 2003 film, “Monster.”
Earlier this year, Theron spoke about the relationship between her mother and father when she spoke to AnOther magazine and explained that seeing her mother move around influenced her acting style.

“My mom had a complicated relationship with my dad, and I think that really informed me,” she said. “Obviously, when I was young, I didn’t know how complicated people and relationships are.
