John Fogerty credits his wife for saving his life after working so hard at his job.
In a recent interview on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, the 80-year-old founder of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) discussed a difficult time in his music career following a legal battle with his record company over the ownership of his songs, crediting his wife for helping him “get out on the good side of it.”
“A lot of this, of course, comes from the care of my wife, Julie. If I hadn’t met her, I’d probably be dead. It’s that simple,” he said. “I didn’t see a way out. I was really abusing myself, especially alcohol. I was really upset inside.”
He went on to explain that a person who feels the way he does “doesn’t really operate on the same plane in the world” as everyone else, and “can be a depressed type of person.”

“If you’re really hurting inside for whatever reason, I mean something wrong has been done to me,” he said. “But when you get there, and you start abusing yourself with drugs, alcohol, whatever … it becomes a habit. You stay there, don’t you? And so you don’t enjoy the sunshine and the love around you.”
The Grammy Award-winning singer noted that this was his idea when he met his wife, Julie, while on tour in 1986.
Fogerty admitted that he should have been “really happy” about the success of his third solo album, “Centerfield,” but instead felt “sad” and bitter about repressed emotions, adding that he’s “in an endless binge.”
He then released “Eye of the Zombie,” which was less successful but managed to bounce back after meeting Julie.

“One day [I] suddenly I met Julie, not expecting to meet the love of my life, someone I feel I was destined to meet and someone who would help me, with her good grace, find myself and help me enjoy and find the joy of life again, “he said. “And everything changed.”
Fogerty and Julie married in April 1991 and welcomed three children together during their 35-year marriage: sons Shane, 34, and Tyler, 33, and daughter Kelsy, 24.
As the founder of CCR, Fogerty wrote many of the group’s hits, including “Proud Mary,” “Once You Saw the Rain,” “Bad Moon,” “Down in the Corner,” and “Fortunate Son,” but he didn’t own the rights to them until January 2023 when he finally settled a decades-long dispute with the record company.

“As of this January, I have my songs back. This is something I thought would never happen,” Fogerty said in a statement. “After 50 years, I’m finally reunited with my songs. I have a say in where and how my songs are used. Until this year, that’s something I’ve never been able to do. I’m looking forward to touring and celebrating this year! I want to thank Concord for helping make all of this possible. And, I’m excited about new ideas and my renewed music … like a renewed interest.”

Fogerty initially left Fantasy Records in 1974 in a contentious split, with the singer fighting the record label from the start.
Fantasy Records even sued Fogerty for plagiarism, with Fogerty telling Rogan, “I was sued for sounding like myself.”

“It’s me dad [of these songs]. I created them,” said Fogerty Billboardat that time. “They shouldn’t have been taken in the first place. And that carjacking left a big hole for me. The funniest way to look at it is, yeah, it’s not everything. It’s not a 100 percent win for me, but it’s definitely better than it was. I’m still really shocked.”
