An Air Canada Express regional flight collided with a ground vehicle on approach to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, causing an emergency stop and widespread disruption. Authorities are investigating how the incident happened.

An Air Canada Express passenger plane crashed into a Port Authority vehicle on the ground after landing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night, forcing the airport to close.
The CRJ-900 flight, which was coming from Montreal, hit the car at a speed of 24 kilometers per hour just before midnight, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24.
The jet was operated by Jazz Aviation, Air Canada’s regional partner. Air Canada and Jazz Aviation confirmed the incident to Fox News Digital.
“Flight 8646 was en route to LGA from Montréal (YUL),” Jazz Aviation said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “The initial passenger list indicates that the aircraft was carrying 72 passengers and 4 crew, although this will be confirmed. The incident occurred at approximately 11:47pm on March 22, 2026.”

The US Federal Aviation Administration has issued a grounding of all flights at the airport, saying there is an emergency without giving any details.
LaGuardia’s website indicated that arriving flights were diverted to other airports or returned to their original destinations.
The Port Authority confirmed that the plane collided with Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and a fire engine.
“At approximately 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, a Jazz Aviation aircraft working for Air Canada was involved in an incident that occurred on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport when the aircraft collided with a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle that was responding to another incident,” said a spokesperson for the Port Authority in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Emergency response procedures were immediately activated,” the statement continued. “The Port Authority Police Department is on scene along with the agency’s Chairman and CEO. The airport has been closed to facilitate a response and further investigation.”
The spokesperson added: “This is a developing situation based on initial information. The Port Authority Police Department is working closely with our airline partners and government authorities, and will provide additional updates as more information becomes available.”
The New York Fire Department said in a statement that it was responding to an incident involving a plane and a car on the runway at LaGuardia Airport, although it did not provide further details.

The New York Police Department confirmed the collision but did not provide further details.
Several videos taken from the scene show the plane with extensive damage to the front of the plane.
