An Alaska woman says the gun she was carrying helped save her dog’s life after a black bear attacked the animal while it was foraging on the Kenai Peninsula earlier this month.
Lori Price was walking near Skilak Lake on June 7, with her German short-haired pointer, Chaos, and chocolate Labrador, Willis, when the outing turned dangerous.
Price told Alaska News Source that he heard a roar and immediately realized the bear had come into contact with his dogs.
“I heard the bear and registered what was happening,” said Price. “My immediate reaction was, I have to go to my dog now.”

When he saw Chaos being attacked, Price took out his Glock 43 9mm pistol and fired at the bear.
“I pulled my gun, and I shot. Boom! Down like a sack of potatoes to the bear,” he recalled.
Price initially believed the danger had passed. But as he looked at Chaos, who had multiple bite wounds and heavy blood loss, the bear got up again.
Price said he fired again before the animal got up again.

“All of a sudden, the bear stands up again. And I’m like, ‘Oh my God. What?’ “He remembered.
Price and his dogs then fled the area while the bear headed in the other direction. When he got back to his car, Price called 911, although he said poor cell phone service made it difficult to stay in touch with dispatchers.
After reaching his car, he flagged down a passing driver and told them that he and his dog had been attacked.
Paramedics arrived and helped tend to Chaos before Price took him to a veterinary clinic for treatment.

“My heart is broken,” Price said. “He had a lot of bite marks on him. It was like the bear thought he was like a little squirrel.”
Price recommended the veterinarian Dr. Patrick for helping to save the dog’s life.
“Dr. Patrick called me from the vet clinic, and I owe him my dog’s life,” he said.
Chaos was released from the clinic later that day and is expected to make a full recovery. Price said the dog has regained its ability to walk and is still recovering from the attack.

“Obviously we need a lot to recover, but you are really lucky to be alive,” she said.
Willis was not injured during the game.
