A Florida law school has withdrawn tuition and will allow a Turning Point USA chapter following the intervention of Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier after the school initially denied the chapter.

“We’re glad that Barry Law has retracted his studies and is allowing his readers a chance to hear opinions outside of the left-wing echo chamber,” Uthmeier told Fox News Digital on Monday in a statement.

The Voice of Florida reported on April 22 that “Barry University School of Law has withdrawn its previous denial and will allow students to form a chapter of Turning Point USA, complying with Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s demands that the private Catholic institution is ideologically discriminatory.”

In an April 9 letter, Uthmeier wrote, “Denying students the ability to form a TPUSA chapter at Barry Law likely violates students’ contractually ‘guaranteed’ freedom of speech and association. It discourages free discussion, questioning, and expression, and disables students from organizing and joining an organization to promote their common interests.”

Uthmeier, who had asked the law school to respond on May 15, continued, “Barry Law’s decision also violates an express promise that the revocation would not be based solely on affiliation with an organization outside the school. The denial was based primarily on the student organization’s affiliation with TPUSA, which the law school wrongly determined was in conflict with the University.”

He also pointed out that the law school, located in Miami Shores, has a chapter of OUTLaw, an LGBTQ+ student organization found in many US law schools.

“Barry University is a ‘Catholic institution,’ rooted in a ‘liberal arts tradition,’ that ‘enhances and values cultural, social and intellectual diversity’ — obviously unless the student is religious,” he wrote.

Uthmeier added, “Barry Law’s recognition of the LGBTQ organization OUTLaw undermines the Catholic Church’s clear position against transgenderism. Barry Law recognizes his own chapter of the ACLU, which promotes access to abortion — and which is in conflict with Catholic teaching.”

“If these student organizations somehow do not conflict with the purpose of the Catholic university, then TPUSA does not at all,” he continued. “The apparent differential treatment confirms that Barry Law’s stated reason for banning the TPUSA chapter was merely an excuse to criticize conservative students.”
