Body of 5-year-old California boy found after being ‘washed out to sea’

The body of a missing child who washed ashore in California on Tuesday was found Thursday, according to the City of Laguna Beach.

“During a morning aerial search of the beach on June 11, 2026, the Laguna Beach Police Department identified a possible match to a young woman who washed ashore near Treasure Island Beach on June 9, 2026,” the press release said.

“The incident took place 250 to 300 yards off the coast of Christmas Cove, located approximately one kilometer north of where the victim was swept out to sea,” the release explained. “Laguna Beach Marine Safety personnel responded to the area and located the deceased with assistance from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol.”

A GoFundMe campaign with a message to the child’s family says, in part, “It is with unimaginable sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Amada Mia Brown. Amada was only five years old, but she filled every room she entered with joy, laughter, and light. She was a happy, joyful, and loving little girl whose smile could brighten the day of everyone, family friends, loved ones. She knew her.”

“Our family’s lives changed forever after the tragic accident that occurred on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Laguna Beach. After an extensive search, Amada was found and is now reunited with her loved ones. While we are grateful for answers, our hearts are broken by this tragic loss,” another part of the message declared.

A press release on Wednesday noted that “Based on initial information, a mother and her two children were swept out to sea by strong currents. [c]conditions there near the coast. Bystanders quickly entered the water and successfully rescued the mother and one child.

The child’s mother “would do anything a mother would do, take her children out to have fun,” said the toddler’s father, Aaron Brown, in a KABC news report. “Unfortunately, the waves were too high.”

The discovery of the body took place after the search efforts had ended.

The US Coast Guard noted in a press release Thursday that it had suspended its search Wednesday evening.

“We mourn the child’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” said Capt. Stacey Crecy, commander of Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach. “Stopping the search is a very difficult decision. We launched supplies and responded as quickly as possible, continuing to search through the night until sunset on June 10, 2026. We worked closely with first responders in Laguna Beach to conduct a coordinated and thorough search of the area.”

A Wednesday release from the City of Laguna Beach noted that “As of sunset on June 10, 2026, Laguna Beach Marine Safety personnel and aid agencies completed a dedicated search and recovery operation for a young woman who went missing at sea off Treasure Island Beach on the night of June 9, 2026.”
