Chelsea Handler opens up about her philosophy on men and dating.
During a recent appearance on the “Angie Martinez IRL Podcast,” the 51-year-old comedian discussed her thoughts on relationships, marriage and men in general, telling the host that she “doesn’t go out looking for men,” noting, “that’s not my agenda in life.”
“I’m here for the women and I’m coming here,” she said. “I’ve never wanted a man or a partner. You have to really pay attention to me in order for me to pay attention in a serious way because otherwise it’s a bunch of random encounters. You know what I mean? I like that. I like to travel a lot. I like to meet guys. I don’t like to be too serious. I don’t want time to be with someone in my space.”
When it comes to whether she believes in growing old with someone, Handler said, “I mean, yeah, you sure do,” but then pointed out that “there are 8 million of us” in the world, and instead of thinking of yourself when you’re not in a relationship, “you have to think of yourself as ‘I’m free. I’m free now to make all the decisions that I want on my own.'”

Freedom is a big deal for the former talk show host, who added that “my whole heart is about freedom.”
“I like the idea that I don’t have to tell anyone about anything I do,” he said of being single. “I don’t have to think or consult with anybody. If I want to get on a plane to Paris, which I’m going to do soon, I’m going to Majorca for a month and— I’m going by myself. You know what I mean? I’m going to do all these things.”
Handler is currently in a relationship with a guy she calls “Cowboy,” whom she met when he loaned her $1,000 after sitting next to her at a blackjack table in Las Vegas. They later clicked when he joined her on a trip to Antarctica, and the rest is history.
Despite breaking up with her new beau, she still says marriage is “not something I’m good at doing,” calling it an “outdated” tradition and a “really stupid idea.”

“But since I have cried for marriage my whole social life, it would be really hypocritical for me to get married, which means I will probably do it,” she said. “At some point I might just go, okay, f— it. I’m 50 years old, so I might as well just get married. What could go wrong at this point? But I don’t care about marriage. I don’t care about that. I feel like that’s a very normal thing. You’re a little like a commodity.”
The former “Chelsea Lately” athlete has been in a few public relationships in the past, most recently with fellow comedian Jo Koy, who she dated for less than a year.
Handler announced their separation in July 2022, saying that Koy’s love “has been one of the greatest gifts of my life,” and that he helped restore her “faith in men, in love, [and] being 100% who I am.”
He also discussed the reason for their breakup in the episode “Now What?” in December 2022, telling Brooke Shields that she thought she had found “someone [I’d] I wasted my life,” and even considered marriage, but that “toward the end of the relationship, it became clear that this was not my person.”

“There was just behavior that we couldn’t agree on… It felt to me like I had to give myself up, maybe I would have been okay if I was 20 or 25, but I wasn’t willing to do that. No matter how much I loved this person – and I loved him a lot – I wasn’t going to give up,” Handler continued.
