Former Florida Gators coach Billy Napier was ripped apart by a former player during a podcast appearance

If you’ve been following my work since I arrived at OutKick last May, you know exactly how I feel about former Florida Gators coach Billy Napier.
Current football coach James Madison has been the subject of many articles written by you that really express my frustrations about his coaching tactics, and for good reason.
When he left Gainesville in October of last year, Napier compiled a 22-23 record as the Gators’ head coach, becoming the first full-time Florida coach since 1950 to end his tenure at UF with a losing record.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg, but suffice it to say, I don’t need any help when it comes to finding reasons to consider his coaching career with the Gators a failure.

However, I’ll welcome any post-mortem news about Billy Napier’s mistakes in Florida, and that’s exactly what we got from former Gators quarterback Jonathan Odom.
Odom played at the University of Florida under Napier and current UNLV coach Dan Mullen, and discussed the differences between the two while appearing on “The Elliott Caldwell Podcast.”
The entire episode is fascinating, so be sure to check it out, but the juicy stuff for college football fans starts around the 13-minute mark.
In explaining why Mullen and Napier were both ultimately fired at Florida, Odom addresses the relative weakness that plagued his former coaches, saying that while Mullen had short-term success, he eventually burned out due to “off-the-field” activities.
A strong Gators team was not kind to Napier.
“Napier, he just had no idea,” Odom explained. “He was rolling whenever we got into pressure situations… and we just had a lot of predictability.”

That’s a cruel test, but it gets worse.

Odom went on to call the lawsuit “junk food” and said everyone on the other side knew what was coming.
“If I’m a defensive coordinator watching our film … I can predict everything that’s going to happen.”
FLORIDA COACH JON SUMRALL’S RECENT COMMENTS PROVE HE IS AS PSYCHO AS HIS FANBASE.
This is consistent with what multiple defensive coordinators have been quoted as saying before and after the Gators and Napier, who famously refused to give up playmaking duties while in Gainesville.
In another clip, Odom calls Napier a “little boss,” saying he would never “let the coaches coach.”
“He wanted to get his hands on everything,” Odom said. “He wanted to be in control of everything: offense, defense, special teams.”

Perhaps the worst indictment of Odom and Caldwell’s play comes from the story he tells where he would relay what he saw on the field to his position coach, Napier shut down for straying too far from the game plans.
“We’d come off the sideline… I’d tell the coach of the team ‘hey, they’re doing this, maybe we should do this,'” Odom recalled. “The tight ends coach will get on the headset and go, ‘hey, Napier. Odom says they’re doing this on the line, maybe we should try this.’ And he’ll be like ‘we’re not changing what we’re going to do with one gap.’
“It was his way or the highway.”

Crazy good stuff from Odom, and anyone who knows Napier and his coaching style will probably believe every word he says.

It’s worth noting that Odom was kicked off the show at the end of Napier’s second season in 2023, so maybe it’s all sour grapes from a scorned former player, but I highly doubt it.
Odom is also a double legacy at Florida, and his father is in the UF Hall of Fame as a former offensive lineman.

The ties to Florida run deep in the Odom family, so Napier had to do something to upset Jonathan to get him to pass.
The deal is done, both Odom and Napier are apparently no longer in Florida, but it’s nice to hear a former player is a small sample of what went wrong with his former coach.
