People hoping that Henry Ruggs III might be granted parole on Thursday insisted that he is a better person, regrets the 2021 car accident that killed a woman, and is ready to rejoin society. It wasn’t good enough for the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners.

The board denied Ruggs’ request for parole, and he may not be out until 2027 when a mandatory parole date is set.

It’s been nearly five years since Ruggs, a 2020 first-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders, drove his sports car at speeds of up to 156 mph and crashed into the car driven by Tina Tintor.

Tintor, 23, and his dog, Max, died when their car burst into flames.

Prosecutors at the time said Ruggs was legally intoxicated. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.16, twice the legal limit, in a test taken within the required two hours after the crash.

Ruggs spent the night of Nov. 2, 2021, at Topgolf, a sports entertainment complex in Las Vegas, according to prosecutors.

The prison sentence effectively ended Ruggs’ NFL career, although there has been talk that he would like to try to make a comeback if he is eventually released. He will be 28 years old when he retires before the 2027 NFL season.

Ruggs, meanwhile, completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Alabama, participated in prison and trustee work programs, including a stint working at the Nevada governor’s mansion under the federal inmate work program, and expressed his remorse for the incident.

Apparently that was not enough for the Board.
