From EV push to oil production: climate politics meets hard reality

Former White House chief of staff (and 2028 presidential hopeful) Rahm Emanuel is associated with the saying: “You never want a big problem to go to waste.” His point was to turn voters’ short-term concerns into long-term political gains.
Yet with a gallon of gasoline averaging more than four dollars in early April, the usual deafening chorus from the environmental movement has turned to bitter groans — even before Earth Day, its holiest of holidays. As the world is plagued by an energy crisis, the silence among climate groups is an admission that their beliefs are not the solution.
Consider California Governor Gavin Newsom. Last July, he announced that his position, “economic growth does not come in spite of clean energy but because of it.” Now, he sums up his administration’s role of “properly increasing oil production” in a press release.
TRUMP’S UN SPEECH QUESTIONS THE REALITY OF HIGH COSTS OF GREEN ENERGY
Here are three examples of changing climate politics, and their implications for the future.
EV Demand Remains Low
During the Biden administration, the push to push consumers into electric cars was everywhere. At the federal level, $7,500 in tax credits were offered. California has implemented guidelines requiring 100% of new cars and light trucks sold to qualify as “zero-emission” by 2035.
In June 2022, as gas prices rose, Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich) declared “it didn’t matter how expensive” gas was because she was driving an EV.
How times (and numbers) have changed. In 2024, the Big Three automakers in the home region of Stabenow lost 52 billion dollars on EVs – higher than their total profit combined.
Remember when then-President Joe Biden went to Michigan to take pictures with Ford’s F-150 Lightning all-electric truck? Faced with the need to flag, Ford stopped production of the Lightning last year, noting, “the American consumer speaks clearly.”
Indeed, they are. The latest The Wall Street Journal a story that described “most empty and money-losing” EV manufacturing plants across the Rust Belt as part of “America’s messy divide with electric vehicles.” Even if consumer interest in EVs is peaking as some analysts expect, the reaction of politicians is telling the truth.
Communist Cuba Saved by Russian Oil
The conflict in Iran has overshadowed the tragic plight of the Cuban people. During more than six decades of misery under the Communist regime, the lights have literally gone out since the January ouster of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro. Cut off from cheap oil from their socialist-friendly neighbor, Cuba has run into a humanitarian crisis. I New York Times documented patients suffering or dying in hospitals without power, and ambulances parked because drivers can’t get gas.
Cuba relies on oil and gas for more than 90 percent of its electricity, compared to just 2 percent of renewable energy. The situation got so bad that President Trump – who is often reviled by his critics for his alleged lack of compassion – allowed a Russian oil tanker to reach Havana, commenting, “they have to survive.”
BIDEN WANTS TO DRIVE HOPEFUL ENERGY ‘IN THE HOLE,’ TRUMP ENERGY SECRETARY SAYS.
Just as there are no atheists in foxholes, there are precious few naturalists where basic human needs are lacking.
America’s Energy Dominance Reduces Hitting
While the current high energy prices are painful, countries more dependent on energy than the United States are feeling the pinch. In March, the Philippines switched to a four-day work week. Slovenia became the first country in the European Union to offer fuel. Thousands of petrol stations across Australia, with 90% of their fuel coming from the Middle East, have run out of fuel.

It’s a different story here at home, where US crude oil imports from the Persian Gulf have fallen to their lowest level in 40 years amid rising domestic production.
Meanwhile, natural gas prices in the US, which account for nearly half (43%) of our nation’s electricity, remain low, while they are rising nearly 70% in Europe and Asia.
President Trump deserves a lot of credit for his renewed focus on American Energy Dominance.

On this Earth Day, the climate movement will once again make their chicken cry a little, but the chaos is far from recent years. There are very few hyperbolic claims that “the world will end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change,” as US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced in 2019.
International affairs reveal the inextricable connection between power and national security, a lesson that most reasonable Americans understand instinctively. The climate movement knows that even at this critical time, their brand of politics has been defeated by common sense.
