Marxist political activist Hasan Piker opposes a government investigation into his recent trip to communist Cuba, which he calls a “intimidation tactic” because of his tough stance on Israel and the US.
Piker’s response – echoed by other leaders of the Democratic Socialists of America and pro-communist and anti-Israel leaders – shows how the Cuban “solidarity” movement, communist activists and anti-Israel networks come together online to organize an investigation of the organization not as a sanction or investigation of foreign influence, but as political repression aimed at anti-capitalist anti-Israel.
Piker told fans during a live stream on Twitch Sunday afternoon that he was meant to be a “loud speaker” and “activist,” criticizing Israel and the “fascist” United States.
Fox News Digital reported Saturday that the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has sent subpoenas to Piker and leftist CodePink founder Medea Benjamin to obtain documents about finances, supplies and contact information for their March trip to Cuba, in possible violation of laws and regulations regarding doing business with the Cuban government.
“It’s not good,” Piker told his fans in the first minutes of his live broadcast on Sunday afternoon. “It’s not good news, okay? Um, I mean, bulls—. But it’s not good…I mean it’s bulls—but it’s still not good that they’re after your boy. They’re going up the–.”
Piker did not respond to requests for comment, although he admitted to receiving questions as he spoke to his fans during a live broadcast. He said his trip had been cleared by the Office of Foreign Exchange Control, and said, “Everything we’ve done has been cleared by the Treasury.”
The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control did not respond to a request for comment.
At the end of his part in the government’s investigation, Piker responded to the inquiry about the Cuban sanctions to deny that the investigation was caused by a reversal of his views on Israel.
“A lot of this, it’s still a lot about Israel,” he said, alleging that his critics “don’t like me talking about — about Israel” and “I don’t like that I’m a big talker, an agitator.”
He said the investigation was “not only about Cuba” but also about his role in promoting anti-Israel voters.
“They see that Democrats and young people are anti-Israel” and they see him “campaigning for people who are anti-Israel, and winning their races,” he said.

Piker’s response followed a pattern that has become common among online activists under scrutiny: reframing a legal or regulatory investigation as a political prosecution while elevating the issue into an all-out ideological struggle. Rather than focusing less on the sanctions questions surrounding the Cuba trip, Piker made himself the victim of a coordinated campaign by “Israel first” Democrats, pro-Israel activists, media figures and the “fascist” Trump administration.
He often steered the conversation away from the depth of the Treasury investigation and toward the larger issue where the federal government is accused of crimes against Israel, anti-capitalist politics and opposition to US foreign policy. He wanted to present this investigation as proof that powerful political and media institutions are targeting dissidents who challenge the establishment positions on Israel, Cuba and American foreign policy.
At one point, Piker said he made a small documentary about life in Cuba during his March trip, saying he was working as a journalist. At other times, he has described the mission as a “humanitarian” effort, framing his trip as providing “humanitarian aid” to the Cuban people.
Piker reiterated this argument using the language increasingly appearing in Socialist, Communist and anti-capitalist campaigns on the Internet, where activists have used the phrase “Epstein class” as shorthand for the rich and morally corrupt American capitalist class. This propaganda echoes the propaganda of America’s enemies, including Cuba, China, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia.
He read a comment from a fan who wrote, “We will free you brother.”

Piker replied, “Looks like I’m going to be made an example…of America’s turn toward fascism.”
He dismissed claims that Elon Musk made a “boss call” to call Piker after he did an interview yesterday with Ashley St. Clair, the mother of Musk’s child. The two are facing a custody dispute.
“I haven’t found anything yet,” Piker said.
“Yes, I will be a lawyer,” replied the fan.
He said he needed an attorney with experience in the First Amendment and “experience in OFAC.”
“I haven’t done anything yet,” he said. “And it’s unlike anything I’ve ever done.”
On Saturday evening, Piker posted on X that “the US government would rather try to criminalize bringing aid to a starving country, than punish the Epstein class.”

At 10:51 pm, Benjamin of CodePink wrote: “Sending medical supplies to children’s hospitals in Cuba is now a crime? Saving children’s lives is a crime? Administration is not fun at all.”
Benjamin reiterated the organization’s broad framing of the Cuban expedition as a “humanitarian” mission, as organizers and participants repeated aid campaigns and overtly political speeches criticizing the Trump administration, US sanctions policy and what activists described as “imperialism” and “settler colonialism” in Cuba and Latin America.
Piker’s uncle, leftist commentator Cenk Ugyur, founder of Justice Democrats, a social organization that helped elect Ilhan Omar, Rashida Talib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Congress in 2018, defended him online Saturday night.
“Obviously the government sent Hasan,” Ugyur wrote. “They tighten the rope in speaking. Remember, they will always have an excuse or some technicality. It’s not like they’re going to tell you, ‘We did it because we don’t like what you’re saying.’
Uygur then linked the investigation to broader left-wing claims about the suppression of pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel speech, saying the government uses legal and procedural means to target political dissent instead of criticizing ideas.
WHO IS HASAN PIKER? MEET THE RANDOM BROKER WHO IS BLESSING THE BAD ON THE INTERNET AND SPREADING DEMOCRATS
Piker called CodePink founder Jodie Evans “a wonderful person.” She took a photo in Havana with Evans, which she shared on her Cuban Instagram account.
After 3 p.m., an hour and 12 minutes into his live broadcast, Piker admitted, “I better deal with this.”
Half an hour later, he insisted that he was directed at his strong opposition to the existence of the state of Israel, playing a clip of Rep. Mike Lawler, RN.Y., Rep. Josh Gottheimer, DN.J., as they talked about the rising tide of anti-Semitism, including Piker.
At one point, Piker laughed as the two lawmakers discussed growing reports of anti-Semitism in the US.
Piker later went on to support the Islamic Republic of Iran in its negotiations with the US and Israel to end the war in Iran, mocking the Israeli delegation, criticizing US foreign policy for allegedly allowing “Israel to control our entire Middle East policy” and focusing his monologue on criticizing the “Zionist state” of Israel and the United States.
