KARL ROVE: Trump fires Pam Bondi and the political drama has just begun

NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!
In some ways, President Donald J. Trump’s firing of Attorney General Pam Bondi should not have come as a surprise, especially after the president of Truth Social last September criticized her for failing to prosecute her political opponents. He told him he was “just talk, no action” and declared that inaction was “killing our reputation and credibility.”
Whether that posting was meant to be private or public, it is clear that the president was not happy with the attorney general. And this was on top of his mishandling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and the release of government files on him.
The next few months are going to be interesting. The acting attorney general, Todd Blanche, can run the Justice Department for 210 days. That means he can stay in this position until the end of November, after the midterms. That would save the White House a confirmation battle during the election.

Perhaps, now that he has removed the bandage from firing Bondi, the president may want to promote Blanche. Can Senate Republicans get him through a hearing before the August recess?
Senate Democrats may be expected to cheer him on two issues Trump was unhappy about with Attorney General Bondi, namely the Epstein files and tracking the president’s enemies list. How will the Democrats work to attack Blanche? And with 53 Senate Republicans likely to be confirmed, will any of the issues raised in the confirmation hearing help Democrats during the terms?

Then there is talk that the president may be leaning on Environmental Protection Agency Administrator and former New York Ambassador Lee Zeldin as the new attorney general. Zeldin is loved by his former House colleagues, who don’t get to vote on his confirmation but can be a chorus of support. Democrats would still hit him on Epstein and the possible prosecution of the president’s enemies.
None of these questions are going away, especially since Bondi has an April 14 presentation scheduled before the House Oversight Committee.
The Republican chairman may find it impossible to cancel his appearance now, as Rep. Nancy Mace, RS.C., led the Bondi recall effort. He was joined by three other Republicans on the committee in voting with all Democrats on the committee to compel Ms. Bondi to appear.

Of course, we shouldn’t be surprised that the president dumped his attorney general. But his dismissal does not end the problems that led to his removal. Recently, the number of political players who will have to answer difficult questions about the same issues has increased.
Get your popcorn. The shooting of Pam Bondi was just one episode.
