British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly considering stepping down and may announce the timing of his departure from Monday, according to a report published on Saturday.

British newspaper The Observer reported that Starmer was discussing his future with his wife at his Checkers residence before making a final decision.

The newspaper reported that senior figures in the Labor Party are expecting a statement on his future early next week.

A government source told Reuters that Starmer was still focused on governing and pointed to earlier comments when he vowed to stay in office.

Pressure on Starmer has been mounting for months amid growing discontent in his party and concerns over the government’s handling of the economy and lifestyle problems.

The political threat to Starmer intensified on Friday after his rival Andy Burnham won a seat in Parliament, putting him in a position to formally challenge for the leadership.

Starmer congratulated Burnham following the win, writing in X that voters had “chosen a Labor campaign of hope and optimism over division and hatred.”

When asked about Burnham’s ambitions to succeed him, Starmer insisted he intended to stay in office.

“I’ve said over and over that I’m not going to leave that,” Starmer said.

Starmer led the Labor Party from 2020 and became prime minister in 2024.

Calls for him to step down have intensified over the past month, as more than 100 lawyers have publicly urged him to withdraw or postpone his departure. A number of parliamentary assistants also resigned in protest.

The internal revolt followed a series of disappointing local election results for Labour, which lost hundreds of council seats across England, gave up long-held territory in Wales and fell behind political rivals in Scotland.

Starmer’s popularity has also declined amid persistently high living costs, slow economic growth and criticism of his acceptance of gifts from wealthy donors.
